my daughter wants to buy a 2010 onwards vw polo. its either the 1.2 petrol or diesel engine. it`ll mainly be used for local commuting up to 10 miles per day monday to friday and leisure miles at the weekend.
i started to do a bit of research and was wondering how other people are getting on with cars fitted with a dpf and low daily mileage. bearing in mind from what i have read about dpf and regeneration problems.
maybe better of with a petrol?
thanks

You need to give DPF's good heat to keep them clean. Ive seen a few problems with cars that the owners pootle around and the dpf's clog up.

So for only a few miles town driving id say petrol.

have you allso compared both engines mpg and road tax
if your not getting at least 40mpg urban out of a diesel i wouldn't bother

If you mend your motors you self then EGRs and manifolds can be removed and cleaned ( all work with the DPf on exhaust emissions )
your Dpf once knackard is knackard
fuel additive and a blast down the road are just a quick fix

My sister's boyfriend used to own a Vauxhall Insignia, he did similar type driving. And his DPF kept getting clogged, and cost him a fortune. He bit the bullet, sold it for less than he bought it. Then went for an Audi TT 2L petrol. Despite my protest a LR is much more practical.

It was an insignia my mate had probs with, less than 1ook on the clock and had been blasted to Disney france twice
Silly boy got another vauxhall deisel to replace it
Both of which dont get the MPg my old audi got, that had an old system were you could just blank the egr and cut the guts out the dpf

For short journeys get a petrol. My Mazda 6 has a DPF in it and it is a complete pain. Had it serviced in august, and needs another now because the oil level has increased from being diluted with diesel.

That being said my parents have a 2.0d x3 and that has never had any problems despite my mum mostly using it to go to the shops.

Another thing to consider is that diesels are a lot less economical around town due to the weight, my car get 45mpg on long runs, but only 30 on short journeys.

Petrol 100%

Diesels aren't any more economical than petrol round town when you factor in the extra fuel cost.

My next door neighbour bought a mini diesel to save fuel, within 6 months it cost him £1000 for a new dpf, made my impreza look cheap to run

10miles is not enough from what I've seen. I've had to clean many a dpf out now due to not regenerating.
Definately go petrol it will give far less problems I'm sure
