javing just rebuilt the top end after the timing belt snapped I feel like I am down on power and my mpg is not as good as before. I am assuming I have not got the timing perfect and need to adjust it. I have vague recollections of the same thing happening on a previous change and I redid it moving the crank by half a tooth which improved things. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
If so which direction do I need to move it by?

Which engine is it?
Do you have any smoke during start-up and/or running, and if you have, what colour is it?
Is the tension set correctly?

disco 200tdi, only the usual puff of black to start with, then nothing, same as before, if anything slightly less smoke when you floor the loud pedal. Yes the tensions was set correctly, I ended up doing the belt a couple of times, as had to remove it again to check the cam keyway as detailed on my thread below.

What damage was done when the belt went ? And what was replaced other than the belt?

Link to thread detailing snapped timing belt issues. Replaced the pushrods and reground the valves.

Had the same with new timing belt. Had it done at a garage and they confirmed it was a tooth out. Came back good as before.

This is what i think has happened. I seem to have vague distant memories of having the same issue the first time I ever replaced the timing belt (first time I had done one), I redid it again after about 10k and it was much better. Didn't have the problem last time I changed it, but I could lock everything in place before removing the old belt. This time with the snapped belt everything was spoiled before I got in there.

You can line everything up and lock everything in to place without having the belt on first. Did you use a proper timing kit or improvise?

It's most likely injection is retarded at the pump....if the cam-crank timing was indeed set properly, then you need to slacker the three bolts holding down the drive wheel of the injection pump at the front and turn the 22mm nut ever so slightly clockwise to advance injection advance.....you will know you're too advanced when diesel knock is significantly increased with it running.
The proper way to do it is to have the engine at TDC and set it with precision tools from the back of the IP

Everything was lined up with a proper timing kit. Photos of the alignment are on the linked thread detailing the rebuild.

Check the belt again.
+1 pump/tooth 1 out
That was my feelings, glad that seems to be general consensus here as well. I will order a new gasket and some antifreeze and try and redo the timing. Just need to find a few hours spare to squeeze that in.
