Hello guys this is my first post and unfortunately because my 98 Freelander 1.8 fails to let me get in and drive it anymore. I needed to replace my battery sometime in January and i haven't driven it a lot since then but i figured since the internal alarm light was still flashing that there shouldn't be a problem letting me in to the car because even the old battery let me do that.

The fob doesn't do anything, no locks no lights flashing so i replaced the fob battery and still nothing. Have tried unlocking the door with the key but the key goes in and doesn't turn no matter how hard i try. So i am at a bit of a loss because its not like i can even open the bonnet or get in to check anything.

Has anyone got any ideas or had any experience of such things before? I am searching the forum but have not found anything as yet so any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Ray

You should have a keycode for your car.

Turning either left or right depending on the combination.

I think thats right?

Yes in the book it says a i have a card with a Key Code on it but not been able to find that so might have to contact a dealer, however i can't even turn the lock to put a key code in if i hade one. :-(

sounds scarily like the ignition barrel has been replaced and its now a different key which starts it to that will unlock the doors. Have you tried the other key(s)?

maybe a siezed door lock and flat car battery .
wd40 the lock .
I TEND TER AGREE WIFF TITCH. . . .Try wd40 first, if that fails then yer gonna have ta get eggspert help or like ma clever mutt porky say's [eeze er furra bread],just smash the window pull open bonnet and recharge said batterie:D

None of this sounds particularly good. The guy i bought it from didn't mention that it had been stolen or needed a new barrel however it didn't come with a second set of keys!! I'll try the WD40 but i am fearing the worst. Not even sure who to talk to next really, do i go to a dealer or maybe just an auto lock smith? I dare say it's going to cost me a fair wollop no matter what route i need to take. Problem is if this is a battery thing then i am going to get this problem again coz i hardly drive the car, literally once a month. Should have bought the smart car! :(

Can you not open the bonnet by gaining access from the under side? ie take the sump guard off and pop the bonnet? before smashing a window :D

Take sump guard off, connect 12v positive to your battery (reach up if you can or connect to the terminal on the Alternator with the Red wire).

Connect 12v Negative to the gearbox (anywhere)

Try your plip 5 times in succession and should open front door.

If you gain access decide whether to recharge (drive your car) or replace the battery.

Should last 1 month without a start - if not consider a higher capacity battery.

Regards,

Steve

Cheers for all the ideas, i actually have a Battery Booster that i could use to get this working using the same method i guess. So looks like i need to get my hands a bit messy this weekend. Thanks for the all the replies and i'll post back to tell you how i got on.

This has been covered on a previous thread, I think they connected the positive to the power on the starter motor cause they couldn't reach the battery. Someone else managed to hook open the bonnet release through the door seal !!!!
