Door lock issues

I am wondering if any of you could offer me some advice? I have recently been having some problems with my alarm on my Rangerover P38 4LSE (1997). I now have to put the key into the door to unlock; then put the key into ignition and then press 'door open' on key fob to start engine. If I try to open the door by using the key fob then the door just makes a clicking noise and won't open. I have had an engineer come out already as I had engine shut down - it said 'enter key code'. The engineer did not have the door problem when he came out, it appeared to work for him. Now he says that he would have to charge again to check the door noise out - so I am wondering if any of you have had this same problem? Should I carry on with trying to find the route cause, or should I investigate costs for a new alarm system? Your advice would be gratefully appreciated.

its quite common to get these sort of problems and i dont think you need to pay anyone anything at the moment, except a little bit of attention of course.

Security and Alarm System Operation & Diagnosis on Range Rover 4.0/4.6/P38A holds info on how to sync the keys and car and enter the eka code.

if syncing the keys to the car doesnt work(lock car then press button within a few seconds) i have also heard of a method where you hold the lock in the lock position then press the lock button whilst still in the lock position.

if the problem persists take off the drivers door card and retry locking/unlocking. also test the latch is locking and unlocking the door. if the latch connecting rod is catching or bent it will cause the rod to drag and not make the microswitch or make the small motor in the door latch assembly unable to move the lock.

if the rod and latch are free, remove the door lock assembly, strip it down and free off the internal parts. test it on the door by reconnecting and locking/unlocking the door with the fob.

once the lock is working properly reassemble in reverse order and test before and after putting door card on.

a tip during all this is to leave sunroof open just incase you lock yourself out!!! - sounds stupid but it happened to some idiot i know!!!

also do a search of this forum, i have repaired my locks using this method, i made it up as i went along but hey ho it fixed!!!
