went to get another key cut today but was told that it is chipped.the guy that was going to cut it said watch an not get ripped of as they might charge you 4 key, coding it, an finally charge you 4 cutting it .does anybody now where the best place to get this done so as not to get ripped off?

colinw i was just going to post the same thing , thanks for saving me the time .
i just got quoted 170 pounds for key and fob on my freelander , not likely !
so been to a key cutter today and he cant copy the chip in the key for some reason ? anyone know who can ?
i am not bothered about the fob the key does all i need

someone on here had the reasonably good idea of dismantling the steering column and fixing the chipped key in the column, where it can be seen by the immobiliser prox coil. The it can always be started by any cut key, whether it is chipped and coded or not.
I hear you cry "this defeats the immobilser", but the scally trying to nick your motor has to know you've done it. Out of all the cars on the road which are immobilised in this way, whats the chances of them finding yours ?

i was thinking the same wigleytuff , i live in the middle of nowhere anyway so i dont think there is much chance of theft !
i am using the key at the moment as my fobs have been damaged by random farm accidents and am to tight to pay daylight robbery prices to get replaced .
will the copy key still disarm the alarm when i open the door ? it is on a 05 td4

Should do. As far as I know, there is no transponder search coil in the door lock, so it relies on the lock barrel alone, which has a set of contacts which trigger the ecu which in turn unlocks the doors and turns off the alarm.

Might be teaching you to suck eggs, but if you are using the key to lock the vehicle, don't forget to turn it anticlockwise so it locks, release the key, then turn it again to "superlock" the vehicle. This prevents the doors/tailgate being unlocked if someone smashes a window. (Does it automatically from the keyfob)
