Anyway, my Hippo is now finally sorted out but after all these issues I've just fallen oot o' love with it. Kind of indifferent now and there's no point having a landy if you don't love it. So I'm going to drive down memory-greelane and I'm saving for a Disco 2. Going to get one like the second one my old man had - facelifted TD5 Landmark or ES. We had a fantastic holiday driving round the Western Ilses in it one year, really comfortable and smooth all the way.

I'm hoping to get around 3k for the Hippo, it's a looker so I think I can. So I'm looking at disco's between £5k and £6.5k. Looks like there are some pretty cracking ones at the top end of that, plenty of GS models cheaper but I quite fancy leffer seats wif armrests innit.

I'll be laning it but it won't be doing pay and play, I'm going to build a toy for that sooner or later. The only mods I am planning are a 2" lift (spacers to begin with, about £80.00), 265/75/16 BFG's (about £130 each), decat pipe (£???,) glasspack silencer (£???,) Light guards and getting it remapped (£???). If someone can help me fill in the blanks with cost that'd be awesome.

I'm not a big fan of gribbly offroad disco's covered in stuff myself, but that's just me.

So what should I look out for with disco's in 10 year old, 100k mileage range? Any real nasties I should know about? It'll be a while until I scrape together the cash for this, but I'd really like to get one before xmas.

I'm disappointed. I thought that when you came to the dark side you would get a real man's landy ;).

Rust in the back end chassis . Other than that make shaw all electrics work and all warning lights on dash are working and go out after starting . Check for water damage in side as they do like to leak a bit !!!! ��
 
Unless you get one without sunroofs... only on lower trim specs I think..

2" lift: Not sure if it's advisable to swap out the rear propshaft for one with 2 UJ's instead of a rubber donut. Or maybe that's for higher lifts?

decat pipe - 50 odd quid. Straight through centre section ;) ;) another 50 odd quid :cool:

EGR delete kit if you wish - 20+ to 40 quid or so.

If it needs wheel bearings then it's the complete hub - 100 quid per corner (fronts are more pricey than rears, but all come with new ABS sensors)

Cheers all will do some further reading :). Probably better to get it as good as I can before I spend money on the mods then. What are good ways to prevent rust and leaks once I get it? Yearly waxoyl, anything else?

Did consider it but all fenders in that price range are tatty as ####. Would take thousands to make them pretty enough for me to be proud. Will happen one day don't you worry ;). But won't be my only car.
 
A series is a bit too rough and ready for someone who's just getting rid of a gaylander lol. I reckon you could easily find a quality fender for that money, they seem to be going pretty cheap at the moment and there's a fair few on here.

I've looked are you're right, the good ones start at about 5.5k - though there are plenty of ****bags in the mix too. If I was going to get a fender, I'd be looking for a 300tdi wreck to re-chassis and rebuild from the ground up to a really nice spec. That would cost waaaay more money than I currently have.

The Freelander (which didn't cost me a penny to aquire, though has cost me a lot since) was a great introduction to Land Rovers, but it's time to move on. In my heart I'm in that period of Landy love where my dad would bring fenders home from work with the Rangers, and we had lovely D2s. They both have charms of their own and I'd love to have both! No reason why not one day.

Good point actually, and you can trace the pedigree :). I have to say, if I found a nice one I'd be sorely tempted! Just something that was in nice solid condition. i'll go have a butchers now like ;).
EDIT: Oooh there is a lovely 110 - it's even in my favourite colour!! Hmmm......

Need to sell the hippo first and need to raise the rest of the budget before that. Probably be gone by that time :(.

They do look nice, is it plastic trim or sticky vinyl or something?

Anyways I have to find about about 2.5k before I can afford one anyway.

Agree to disagree!

D2s have soul - usually manifested in their little electronic foibles and leaky sunroofs :D D3s and 4s are far too clinical IMHO (but bloody capable, expensive machines). Series' and 'fenders have more mechanical dummy spitting to lend them their soul and character.
Like the Ford Capri (yes, I am a fan of those!), the Discovery has a great shape (for different reasons!) and presence among today's traffic. I'm glad I was able to finally own one and appreciate it's creature comforts together with agricutural classic Range Rover underpinnings. I was after a 'fender, after all that shape is quintissential LR, but "wrong car, right price, right time". Having cake and eating it :D
