Hi folks,

Having had 5 or 6 landy over the years I have found this forum to be very helpful over the years in my many username s and I am glad that I discovered it however what I will say is dont let any of the major issue posts or worries that people have affect your own ownership experience.

Every forum whether it is audi, bmw merc or indeed landrover is filled mainly by people who have issues with their motors however every car has problems so even though you may read of horror stories on here its actually a common theme through any forum dedicated to any manufacturer as most people who use the forums are looking for solutions and help to their problems.

Just enjoy your hippo, disco rangie or defender and use this as a resource for advice as your motor is probably no less reliable than the next guy.

I have a 04 td4 freelander and love it but if I had went with some of the post and opinions on here I would have been terrified to buy one but seeing as I know the bigger picture I know what the deal is with any car.

well said that man. I have had to discos, am and on my second freelander,
and i got to say (touch wood) they have all been pretty good over the years.
apart from a few niggles ie. poor fuel consumption on present td4, creaking interior plastics i have been quite happy with them. If i had have got onto this site before i bought a landrover, i would have never bought one, and would have missed out on one of the best cars i have ever had.
hope i have not jinxed it now.

True words Mate..

All cars have their own issues,
just some are more expensive to fix than others...

My discovery V8 is fine. servicing and maintenance is different to other marks but all cars have common issue's. Not every single car will have the issue's though. However Gaylanders are universally crap :p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p:p

Nowt wrong with Metallica mate. Where did they find the lined guy in the Enter Sandman vid?
Just got my hippo, it's a lot different to a Rangy, I think the fuel gauge is broken, I've done 200 miles and it's not empty yet, what's wrong?

Here Here well said mate I have re-built almost every engine from nearly every bloody car make over the years. My advice to anybody is its a LAND ROVER chill out its been designed to be fixed in the field sometimes all it takes is a bloody big hammer :drum::drum::drum::drum::amen::amen:

Did you ever work for a water board? The tool kit-big hammer, large flat bladed screwdriver, stillsons!

Haha! Yeah cant beat a bit of metallica, as for the guy in the vid thats the sandman he visits u every night, have you not seen him in your room at night?! :)

As for the fuel gauge I was delighted at the fuel consumption I get from my hippo.
I have owned several 4x4's 3 of em landys and the freelander is easily getting over double the mpg.

Its a cheap motor to run and insure and I couldn't be happier with it.

I agree, the one thing about Land Rovers (Defenders anyway) is it don't matter what goes wrong I can fix it and I know it won't cost the earth for parts.

Try that with some other makes. Got a water cooled Porsche 911, needs new big ends or a rebore? sorry mate can't be done yer' engines scrap.

Exactly I use to drive a series 1 just went on and on

Ill be honest, all this hear say about freelanders has worried me but after driving a few its made me all the more eager to finding a good one.

I know every car make has their problems but I'd like to think I'm now pretty clued up about what to look for etc now.

hi

i think alot of issues arise when they aren't maintained from new, all they normally ask for is servicing them every year and not pushing them past there capabilities

sure as in all off roaders parts break, but at least when repaired the said part should last for years to come

more importantly land rovers can be repaired again and again, where as most ordinary cars just cant as they body work just fall apart

which is also nice other land rover owners will always stop to help another landy, no matter what model as they all serve the individuals purpose

well said also for the original post as i couldn't agree more

A lot of the common Freelander faults are down to bad parts. Like the brake switch I changed many times before LR came out with the convertor cable so we could use another switch which was known to be reliable. Main dealer parts told me this week they sold loads previously but don't anymore - that's because the fault was spotted and sorted out. That's the main problem with the Freelander 1. Over the years they have found the faults and corrected them but it's been at the owners cost. Mainly due to it being out of warranty or the parts haven't lasted the life of the vehicle. Engineering has come a long way over the years and LR as well as many other manufacturers have learnt betterer ways to do things to make them more reliable. The Freelander 2 is much more reliable than the Freelander 1, which is proof of this.
