doing away with abs

can anyone tell me if I do away with the abs pump on my 300 v8 and route the pipes as normal, will it be ok? or is the master cylinder etc purely for abs? i've got brakes but very hard pedal. Took it to my local dealer who says the pump is f...cked. (he put it on the machine).

Any advice would be welcome

If it has abs then it will need it working to pass an MOT. Don't think it will pass an MOT if you remove the abs.

If ABS was fitted as standard on a vehicle then it cannot be removed ,and must work as the manufacturer intended as regards warning lights etc.

The light was removed years ago by previous owner. The pump is nacked and I've got another disco without abs I can use the brake pipes off of. I was just wondering about the master cylinder - is it the same etc.

Dont forget the hissy fit your insurance company will have when you tell them about the change.

Much less hassle to source a recon pump I suspect.

Doing this kind of modification for a pure off-roader is fine in my view, but not for a vehicle to be used on the public roads.

Remember the guy who killed two of his/his partner's kids when he went off the road into a river/ditch? He is inside serving time for driving an unroadworthy vehicle etc etc.

It really isn't worth it. If you cannot afford to repair it, get rid of it and buy something you can afford to maintain properly.

A Disco without brakes is a 2 tonne unguided missle.

Agreed

If it is just the pump then a fairly easy fix - bite the bullet, get a pump. I'm fairly sure the abs on the 300 Disco is a modification of the non-abs system that was done by adding an ABS module rather than being an integrated system as fitted on the RRC hence why the Disco has a servo and then a remote ABS booster/valve block but it is important to take on board what has been said. If the vehicle was fitted with ABS then ideally it should be retained and kept in fully working order.

Kev, thanks for your input - trusted as always. My motor is not used as a car, mainly for an offroader but obviously plenty of slippy spanish roads in between. So I'll bow to everyones advice and get myself a recon pump.

Good call and don't forget that when you're in the mire, the ABS can be really useful especially if it is a bit steep. The traction control works by using the ABS system, careful use of throttle and brake pedal together can work wonders.

Don't forget when bleeding the system you will need lots of brake fluid (5 Litres min) if it's anything like my Rangie. Also make sure you follow the procedure in Rave/workshop manual to the letter.

While you're about it, give your wheel bearings and ABS sensors a check over together with discs and pads. You really don't want to change the pump out and get everything bled to find you have to do it all over again because of some other daft maintainance related glitch.

That would be different a 300 series disco with traction control

I have just bled my brakes as i do every two years and only use 0.5 litre to change the fluid completly it don't take much.
