Hi, this is my first post, I've had my first Freelander about 5 months now and touch wood have had no problems with it.........until I went to open the electric sunroof on Sunday. When it was going back there was a horrible clicking sound and although it will open and close ok it is now making this awful noise and I don't want to break it further. Its a low mileage car and has not got many bills with it but it has got one for October 2006 for some sun roof rails and when my partner took it to the garage they said it would be about £350.00 to get it repaired as it needs a new cable and rails! My question is do I have to have both the sides replaced at the same time cus it was less than two years ago they were replaced the first time, and is this price about right cus if it is then the thing can wait till next summer!! Thanks Sarah

had the same thing happen to mine last year, was a right bitch to get shut again as the glass twisted as it was opening. had to manually try and shut it then used a thin bead of black silicone round the seal as it started to leak. ive now unplugged it so it can't be accidently opened and i just use the aircon . i would get it fixed but it's not cheap,
i could get myself a brownchurch expedition roof rack for the same money,
thats an idea:D now where did she hide my credit card?:D

Hi, many thanks for the replies, its very much appreciated. Reading the thread did help loads so cheers. I contacted a sunroof specialist yesterday and he replied and sent me this, the thing is I understand my local garage will just fit new parts and not try and repair it but I'm worried that I could do a hundred mile round trip to this guy and its not what he says and it is the rails. What do u reckon?

Dear Sara
It sounds like the motor is not meshing with the cables. The motor needs removing and the gear wheel cleaned and lubricated and I would suggest that when it is relpaced the black plastic packing piece on the front screw fitting is left off. That should fix it. If you can bring it to Southampton my repair charge would be £45.00 +vat.

In my opinion the sunroof fitted to Freelanders is 'not fit for purpose'. It is far too fragile and, if you have aircon, forget its there.
