Sometimes I put it into low ratio and when I pull off it jumps back into neutral and I have no drive.

I am guessing that its because its not fully engaging and have found that if I have it in gear and bring the clutch up slightly then low ratio seems to engage better.

Is this 'normal' - my only reason for asking is that I'm going for my first off roading at the weekend where there are some pretty worrisome steep hill descents and I dont want it 'popping out of gear' just as I start my descent...

(I havent had it long enough to know that if I get it into low properly then it will stay there.)

yes its normal gear selection is done by dog clutch and will or may need juggling in, adjust ment can be made on high/low linkage towards transferbox by 2 x 13mm spanner size nuts,or at cam ring at lever end ,also there is a plate on top of housing under gaiter that can be slotted out further to give more travel which can help with faster changes

Thanks, you are Professor Land Rover!

So basically once it is selected properly it should stay in. So as long as I dont get to a precapice before selecting low I should be safe enough.

I did do a course last week where the instructor told me I could engage diff lock and disengage whilst moving and that I could also go from low to high and back as long as I was doing a low speed.

I tried it once but the gearbox seemed to really disagree with the instructor!

there is a 6mm allen key on drivers side rear, top ,side that can be adjusted but most likely allright ,hi/low like any dog clutch or crash gears needs to be aligned speed wise and teeth wise which will occur naturally from time to time but mostly needs lever feeling with clutch or revs etc to engage ,diff lock again is dog clutch but is operated by a spring as you push lever across you tension spring this then engages the collar on to teeth on front shaft as soon as they line up similar with coming out of difflock if you pull lever back spring will disengage it without you doing anything more with lever as soon as torque taken off reverse may be neede if alot of torque in system

As James says, they don't really know whats going on. They have been told by LR, LR don't care if it reduces your gearboxes life.

It can be done without crunching and banging, I have a friend who is pretty good at it, however he did drive trucks with crash gearboxes, so he has some skills in this department.

That said, I've never had much of a problem just stopping for hi-low.

Diff I will move on the run but I make sure the conditions are right (low load on the box).

It is also worth checking that the plastic top hat bushes at the top and middle of the selector aren't worn out.

If they are, it's a quick and cheap to replace them.

Lock to unlock yes, high to low... not really.
I do low to high at about 1mph because it helps it slot in but don't do it any faster, it will put you through the windscreen.
Difflock can be engaged or disengaged up to 10 mph.
