Hello,

With all the people who own p38 range rovers on this site, majority of them are very helpful which is what i like about the site, but i cant get a straight answer to a very simple question.

Which is where is the location on the gearbox to top up with oil?

I have topped up the transfer box though the engine was not running.

There is some kind of cover that covers the some of the gearbox but to remove it, to me makes the refilling of oil a difficult and long winded job.

See your other thread, and while you are at it drain the oil and change the filter, should be done every 30K miles.
You will need an oil pump.

Hi Datatek,
A garage done my full service before and i only drive about 6000 a year in this car.
It was last done a year ago. I'm only trying to top up after replacing the radiator but its turning out to be a nightmare.

My computer would not download RAVE.

Where should this dipstick for the gearbox be, any ideas.

On the diesel the dipstick ould be on the right side of the engine looking from the front, near the bulkhead. It quite likely will not have one though.
If a garage serviced it, it's pretty unlikely they changed the gearbox oil even if they charged you for it.
Removing the protection underneath is easy, filling is easy if you have a simple pump, I use a garden sprayer with the lance removed:)

Thank you all,

And sorry for being a pain.

Iv'e taken a picture of the bulkhead area gearbox engine alignment, there is a yellow plug (no dip stick) is this where a dip stick should be?

Should i put oil in here, asking because i don't want to feck up, done enough of that this weekend.

No, not unless you want fill the fecking bell housing, why don't you read what has been said? The filler is where the gearbox and bell housing meet NOT where the bell housing meets the engine. The dip stick if you had one is unmissable, it has a large mushroom shaped yellow head on my 96 up high level with the rocker cover.

The yellow plug is for the timing pin. To refill the box you either do it through the dipstick tube or after 1999 you remove the undershield and the filler/level plug is on the front of the gearbox sump.

That is the pin cover for locking up the torque convertor what ever you do don't put oil in there! Coz u will feck it up!!!!! You are best to take the shield off around the gearbox and look for a bung of some sort it will either be of a square or hex drive or similar

I'm lucking I have a tube in.the engine compartment.but the engine oil dipstick

OK.

I'll get underneath again and take that friggin cover thing off to try and sort it once and for all.
It's a long old job though just to top up the oil, what a clever idea putting a filler plug behind all that.

Once again thanks for being patient.

I'll just drink my tea before i get under the car again.

Here is a pic of where i topped up earlier.....transfer box me thinks.

I have tried to make pics smaller they still come up large.

Transfer box and gearbox use same sort of oil but it is seperate. That looks a lot like a transfer box.

Thank you.

I think iv'e done it.
Took off that bloody cumbersome cover thing.
Found a plug on the left hand side of the box as you look at the car from the front about half way up the box.
I added a piece of hose to the oil bottle and squeezed like mad....lol.

It'll do for topping up (i hope).

Next time i'll do a complete oil change.

what a pain just to top up.

THANK YOU ALL.

Can we take it that it's a manual gearbox then? It would really have helped if you'd have said that in the first place. You maybe surprised to learn that none of us on here are clairvoyant, at least i'm not. :)
