Does a snorkel affect performance?

A diesel engine needs plenty of cold clean air to make it go well. If it's slightly damp then that is even better.
So a snorkle will deliver that better than an underbonnet filter intake.

Therefore , yes it will affect perfomance;)

cheers landowner thats a tick in the pro's box, what should i expect to pay for a decent snorkel? ie looks tidy and does the job well?

hello to all, does a snorkel affect performance? can anyone give me a the pro's and con's? many thanks Ian
In theory anything that constricts airflow is bad. Like most things it's probably a compromise - if you don't need it don't get it. If you need it, you need it! I haven't got a snorkel (my wife is worried it might affect my performance) but if I got one I'd look for the least possible restriction on airflow.
All those big trucks seem to have them as standard mind...

It could be argued (and it will) that a snorkel allows the engine to breathe cleaner air, as opposed to the dust and sh*t flying around under the wheel arch!

If this is the case then the air cleaner will stay cleaner for longer allowing the engine to breathe easier for longer, IMHO a snorkel helps performance, assuming as mentioned there is no restriction.

It is worth noting that prior to fitting my snorkel (200tdi) that I would need to empty the air filter case and change the filter after a couple of wekends racing along dusty and dry river beds behind other cars, you should have seen the stuff that came out!

Now with the snorkel the dust/rubbish is minimal and I change the filter less often!

JMHO

Now that makes sense!
