It's been niggling me for a while, but I think my supposed SIIA is actually a re-registered SIII to get it tax exempt.

My evidence is the wiring diagram (wire colours and components match an S3), wing mounted heater intake and and dashboard layout. The chassis and engine bay ID plates are long gone, and the only ID available is the chassis no. plate in the cab adjacent to the levers, which claims 88" SIIA.

The only ligit explanation is that an awful lot of parts (including wiring loom!) have been replaced over the years with SIII parts!

However, it does have a 3 bearing engine.

There's no reference to this in the V5 and as I'm not a fundamentalist landy restorer it doesn't really bother me, but what are your experiences of this situation and are there any implications that should worry me?

If its a ringer then you could be in trouble with it, its unlikely to be stolen, however most cars are rung because they are stolen and it will be hard to explain to the plod if they start asking questions, better keep it quiet.
My S3 had a 3 bearing engine too.
There may be another way to date what you have.

Cheers,

Your right - it's not stolen as I HPI checked it, but I think it's probably the old tax dodge, and somewhere in a scrap yard is a knackered SIIA with a SIII log book!

You aint seen me, right?

hahaha dunner worry bout it, its always been done, ther MOT man wont give a **** or prob even pick up on it, my mates 90 is a er.... coiled series 2 with the series front end on it and split screen , its been like that fer years, same as a rebuild, yer gunna stick the old chassis plate on a new galvo chassis, yer not gona re reg it ! ;)

if its always been like it dont worry

90truckcap is right
the tax exemption goes by chassis build date so a new chassis should really mean new build yeart but who is gonna tell anybody
and as for what the mot guy knows unless he is into landys he aint gonna know 1 from another as long as your not trying to pass a 09 moter for a 69 nobody will no the diffirance

SIII and IIA chassis are a bit different. The cross member under the flywheel housing and the mounting brackets for the front flexible brake hoses are different. Your average MOT tester is not going to know about all this stuff. It probably does not even say on your registration documents whether it's a IIA or a III. Early SIIIs are tax exempt anayway and once again your average MOT tester is not going to know when SIII production started. IIAs have the clutch slave cylinder on the drivers side, but SIIIs have them on the passenger side.

It is not the MoT testers job to police tax exemption, so he is unlikely to bother. If you bought it in good faith I would just keep quiet

Cheers fellas,

It's just had it's MOT, and no issues were raised - I'm just going out to take a look at the chassis and clutch cylinder (cheers Fenby)
