Hi all,

I'm having problems with my defender TD5.
Last weekend the light just stopped working.I checked the fuses under the dash and all ok. I checked the fuses under the seat and one of the 'fusible links' for the lights had blown. I ordered one online and in the mean time bodged a 30a fuse in Its place.
This has been blowing after nearly every trip with lights on.
Tonight however, after getting home, the horn decided to sound continuously, then a bit intermittently/randomly then continuously. I don't have an alarm.
I couldn't find the horn to disconnect, tried removing the fuse under seat but that did nothing. I've had to disconnect the battery to stop it.
Could it be a faulty stalk?
I have no idea where to start!!

Thanks!! =)

What makes you say that you haven't got an alarm?

Do you have the remote fobs?

The defender alarm can be set to pulse or to make one long continuous horn blare. I'm guessing your horn or it's connections are getting a bit ired and that it is making a wavering sound.

I'm not sure about the alarm, I'd be surprised if I hadn't noticed it over the years. I don't have any fobs, the keys are just metal. Are they are standard on a pretty 2002?

Sounds like it's been de-programmed at some point. All vehicles summit like 1995 onwards MUST have a manufacturer fitted self setting immobiliser fitted.

If you haven't declared it to your insurance you could be on a sticky wicket regarding your insurance.

It sounds like your alarm/immobiliser has armed itself somehow.

Don't know if the td5 is the same but my horn is just behind the front grille bolted to the underside of the slam panel, can just see it looking through with one spade connector.
If it was the immobiliser/alarm surely it wouldn't start/drive? Might be time to get one fitted anyway if it has no security, my Clifford 650 and Central locking was £450 fitted, sleep a little better knowing it has at least some security.

Had an after market immobilizaer fitted when I bought it. It starts no problem. I'm gonna have a look at the wiring around the stalks today and see if I can spot anything. Thanks for the info on the horn location!

The immobiliser can be programmed to be off but the alarm still on so yes it may still start but yet still sound.

So yesterday I found the horn, behind passenger side headlight, disconnected it. Took steering column cover off and inspected wiring, nothing obvious, replaced fusible link. Headlights now working fine but then all hell broke loose! Wipers started up, cue windscreen fluid until tank was empty and also indicator lights on, no flashy just on.
Im way out of my depth. Its going to the garage on Tuesday.
Thanks for the advice.

Actually, the TD5 horn can be found inside the nearside front wing in between the wheel arch liner and the wing just behind the side light and indicator lamp. There's a couple or three louvres in between the side light and indicator for the horn to sound through.
