dodgie stereo from hell

Hi all,
I'm a first timer, signing on and I need some advise for a replacement stereo. My Kalahari has the C42 stereo with cd interchanger and has been fine, but i've lost both MW & LW on th radio & FM's signal slips in and out.
I want to update with something that I can hook up an mp3/ipod to and preferrable bluetooth, so I can link the mobile into.
I'd also like to keep the use of the controls on the S/wheel.

Am I looking at a lost cause with being ablt to keep the s/wheel controls? or is there a chance on this?

you can put most stereo,s in and with an adaptor still use the controls on the wheel. However from your problems I am just wondering if it may be an arial problem rather than the stereo and if it is then replacing the unit will not solve the problem

I bought a Sony MEX-BT3600 from Half's for mine as it had bluetooth connectivity and a USB input so that I can play all my mp3 tunes from my 16gb memory stick. It's also got a 3.5mm stereo input on the front so you wire your ipod output into that. It's now £190 though, gone up since I bought mine. They do a similar one without the USB for £160.

I then bought a couple of autoleads harness adaptors to fit it. One to match it to the standard wiring loom, and the additional wires to connect up the existing s/wheel controls. They are :

Autoleads PC99-X32 and Autoleads PC99-SON

Cost about £33 incl the postage. They are specific to Sony head units though so you'll need a different one for others.

Booboodag, I had reached a similar point of view of the the airiel. I'm going to check that before i do anything about replacement steroe's.

I swapped out my standard Visteon CD player for a Sony headunit from Halfrauds. It's got the USB and aux ports on the front for my ipod and I just loaded up a 16gb memory stick with tunes and never need to carry a CD with me. This also negates the need for your multichanger. The models that support steering wheel controls tend to be more expensive, so I got a head unit that didn't support the steering controls for £88 (think they wanted £160 for the cheapest one in stock that supported the controls).

I've left the controls in place and kept hold of my original stereo incase I ever decide to sell the freelander on. To be honest I've been running the new stereo for a week and haven't really missed the steering controls.

thanks jodsclass. To be honest 'd accepted I was going to loose the use of the s/wheel controls. I'll also keep the unit for when I sell the car on.

My only dilema now is whether to go for a stereo with bluetooth for the mobile.
