Do I need a q-plate?

I have an tomcat style roll cage sitting on an 88 inch chassis with no id which I am looking to transplant onto the 100 inch chassis that my current discovery is sitting on as it has terminal rust.

I won't be modifying the discovery chassis in any way other than cutting off a bit of the rear overhang, so my question is.

Can I keep the discovery registration with the disco body removed and the tomcat body welded on?

The disco 200tdi is also being replaced with a rangie 3.5 V8

Techically yes, as you will be carrying out a chassis modification by shortening the length of it. However, it is very unlikely that you will get into any legal trouble if you keep the discovery ID.

Unless the age of the conversion can be proved you can get away with the disco reg still, you use to be able to reboot vehicles with no problem...

You can rebody a disco no problem as long as you dont alter the chassis.
Chopping some off the rear is classed as an alteration.

DVLA try not to give Qplates out nowadays. so probably keep disco reg. but need an SVA

Keeping a vehicle’s original registration number

You can apply to keep a rebuilt vehicle’s original registration number if you can prove you’ve used:
the original unmodified chassis or bodyshell (car or light van)
a new chassis or monocoque bodyshell of the same specification as the original (car or light van)
an unmodified frame, either original or new (motorbike)

You must have a registration document or other written evidence linking the registration number to the vehicle.

You also have to have 2 other major components from the original vehicle from the following lists:

For cars or light vans
suspension (front and back)
steering assembly
axles (both)
transmission
engine

so realy as i see it you need to keep both axles and steering components
and dont shorten the chassi

That is for Kit cars or Rebuilt vehicles.
If it is radically altered you also need the engine, gearbox, steering, suspension and axles if the original chassis has been altered.

I would think about keeping the chassis standard if poss.

thanks for the input guys really appreciated.

It all seems a bit subjective, but if I leave the chassis/running gear alone and just replace the body I should be fine?
