Do head gaskets self heal ?

I read some threads the other day on locating ticking noises thought at first it was exhaust manifold but as advised on here used a tube to listen with and it was coming from the bulkhead end .

I've run it for 2 or 3 days and the leak is hardly noticeable now and can only just be heard using the tube. Is it likely to suddenly blow completely or is it safe to run it.

If it's a V8, it might have been a sticky lifter.

In answer to the above queston: In my experience NO!

Its a 200 tdi .
