has anyone every bought and fitted a DIY LPG conversion kit to their landy ?
there are a few companies in the back of different magazines that advertise these kits. i was just wondering if there are any pit falls to these conversions and if anyone came across any problems converting the v8 efi in particular.
if these kits are ok what brand should i go for to reduce problems (in other words the simpliest one to fit ;) ).
i look forward to your comments and perhaps some answers.
regards
phil

Tootle's dead right. The majority (but not all)of insurance companys won't touch a DIY lpg conversion. It needs to be a proffesional job with certificate. LPG conversions also need qualified periodic inspection as part of the certification.

Funny thing is,who supplies the certificate - and to what spec? There is no officially recognised organisation in the UK for this.If you press an insurance company for the exact requirements - they often dont know what to ask for.
Even in "backwaters" like Western Australia no-one can install or service lpg/cng kit without a licience. My brother over there has one and it is to a good standard - but they still have no annual mot/emissions test!
My point is that it is about time it is sorted out,I see lots of very poor fitting by Lpga "approved" garages - some are awful.
One of the best respected Lpg companies in the UK refuses to have anything to do the Lpga,as a result of their poor standards.
By the way, fitting the kit is not that difficult - setting it up to run correctly long term is the tricky bit - unless you do lots of miles and are willing to do regular checks/maintenance I wouldnt bother.

my mate is in the middle of fitting one to his s3. he says it's really easy to fit, and that he is just going to take it down to a local lpg specialist to have it set up and certified

Call up a CORGI regestrered plumber... say you need some gas installation work done... and point him to your landy...

so lpg seems to be a grey area for certification and insurance.
i do high mileage so lpg for me is the best option at present, i have a range rover 4.2 v8 and am worried about the fitting of the gas injectors on the inlet manifold. anyone one done this yet or the extra wiring harness for the brain?

Its true there is no recognised body for control of LPG installations. Anyone of us could make up a certificate and it would be as good as one you get from a regular installer.
Also many insurance companies dont ask or insist on a certificate anyway. I was with Direct line with my LPG BMW, they didnt. I have heard of an number of companies from the other landy forum who aslo dont require it. Tootle & wesley, sorry but you are wrong.

I just installed a kit from Tinley tech (www.tinleytech.co.uk), quite easy to do if you take your time & have a good general engineering ablity. They were also very helpful in answering questions etc.

The sensible thing to do would be to get it inpsected by an installer anyway even if the paper is worth nothing more that peace of mind.
