Discovery Td5 intermittent starting problem

Hi hoping someone can help, been having problems for a while now with my year 2000 discovery TD5. I have an intermittent starting problem, the discovery always starts straight away but sometimes the revs seem to drop and it cuts out after a second or so. It wont then start again unless you turn it over for 10 seconds or so.
So far I have replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter housing, injector seals but still happens. When it first starts the revs seem to be a bit up and down before it steadies out after 3 or 4 seconds, then runs fine. If you really rev it when it first starts that also seems to work and stop it cutting out.
Any help to try and resolve would be much appreciated.

The first thing to check whenever a Disco Td5 engine starts misbehaving for no apparent reason is old oil in the injector harness. Unplug the red plug on the engine ECU to see how much oil has found its way into there.
The engine ECU is mounted directly behind the battery. Take a look at:-

Hello, sorry to join in but my 53 plate Disco 2 auto diesel is in the garage and mechanic is flummoxed. Same sort of thing happens. Starts fine and stops within 2 seconds, then turns over 10 secs pump gas pedal eventually fires with a splutter. (AA diagnosed sticky EGR). Mechanic changed diesel pump & filter thinking it's a fuel problem but still doing it. Will get him to look at ecu connection next week but any other help appreciated, thanks

plus 1 on the injector harness iv just replaced ours its the 2nd one in 2 years 1st time in my mates ownership now in ours

I have had similar problem with starting recently, not EGR as that has been removed.. Mine does have the dreaded oil in ECU red plug and a new Injector loom is being fitted tomorrow.. BUT.. I read and saw on youtube some have had starting problems and it turned out to be the air bleed valve which is a little insert in one of the brass connectors on the fuel filter housing.. I ordered a new one £15 off fleebay and the starting issue has gone.. starts on the button again..

Hi thanks for the help, I’ve had a look now at the ecu connector and all appears to be dry. I have also had the whole fuel filter assy replaced with a new one but that did not work. Initially there was a fault showing saying egr and that appeared to be free but I believe the egr has been disconnected now anyway to eliminate.

The EGR will eventually give you low power or high rev issues, it's not involved in starting at all

AA seemed to think that if egr stuck open/closed exhaust gases choking engine that's why stalling straight away. Problem now seems to only occur if vehile taken for a run, won' start properly next time, but if left on drive will start everytime. (Not overly practical!)

Spot on Sierrafery. Mechanic eventually changed copper washers and problem went away. So far so good, although not been on a long journey yet, but signs are good! Thanks for your help
