hi all....been ages since i been on here....i got a disco now, but its been making terrible grinding noises as if the hi range isnt selected properly and it violently jumps out into neutral....ive messed around with it loads making sure its properly in hi as far back as the stick will let it, to no avail....someone mentioned adjusting the cable to transfer box...but others have said box is nackered.....can anyone help??

cheers lads

There is no cable. It's just a mechanical linkage. If you can feel any slop in the transfer box lever then the linkages are probably loose. You might be able to see them from below but I think it's more likely you'll have to remove the central bit of interior that the gear levers go through.

really..thanks. so all in all you dont think its transfer box?? i have a friend looking at it tomorrow who is a mechanic, ive done most jobs on it but stuff like this is beyond me.....

Not sure how it is on a TD5 Disco, and I'm sure somone will be along shortly to either confirm or shoot down in flames what I'm about to say.

I had this problem on an old Defender of mine.
Turned out that there is som adjustment on the Hi/Lo linkage. The lever was fouling on the casing of the Tranfer-box. Every time I lifted off the accelorator, there was movement of the T/box which knocked the lever just enough to bang it out of Hi-Range.

20 mins with the spanners, and a little adjustment of the linkage, and the problem was solved.

Hope this helps.
