I've now run out of gaffer tape to seal my 1990 twin sunroofs. The seal
itself appears to be fine but when you wind the mechanism, on the last turn
it pops back up a fraction. I've taken the mech apart and the thread on the
worm drive thing looks ok and not stripped. To be sure I put a few washers
under the bolts to effectively reduce the height but this has not helped.

Is there anyway to use a clamp type mech rather than worm drive, or any
other sollutions that might work?

Thanks!

Hello Matt! I've just noticed you're posting here.

Yes I noticed the gaffer tape flapping around last time we were out ;-)

On my old Audi 90 I had a similar situation, which was due to the
runners needing lubrication. This had lead to the sunroof mechanism
jumping a tooth or two at some point, so it wasn't really winding back
far enough causing the seal to be improperly made. Without seeing
your mech I'm not sure if that's likely on yours but it could be worth
trying to separate the worm and gear enough to crank it back a tooth
or two and trying again. If it works, then lube everything up and
don't wind it as fast as you can, be gentle with it.

Failing that, how about a piece of MDF and some no-more-nails?
