Discovery Sunroof Leak

Hi,

Just bought a Discovery 1995 to replace my 110 Defender & the sunroof
appears to leak. Is this common, how do I remove the sunroof, do they leak
between roof & frame or frame & glass, whats the best fix?

I have a 97, I think the they have the same unit fitted. Are you sure
about the source of the leak. I thought the sunroof was leaking with
water dripping from the interior light and off the bonnet release lever.
Using the hose pipe, it turned out to be the windscreen seal from when
the previous owner had got the screen replaced. Loads of mastic behind
the rubber surrond fixed that.

At the same time while searching for the leak, i cleaned the sunroof
glass and rubber with warm water - do not use detergents or you will
soon kill the rubber. Then smeared on some silcon grease (The stuff from
the plumber merchants for the push fit pipes) onto the rubber. It may
have made no difference but no leaks yet!

The rear sunroof on our 1995 Discovery leaks sometimes. All I do is open
the roof and clean the rubber seal and its for a while again. Someone did
tell me to smear vasaline on the seal but I havent done so yet. Wondered if
it might make it worse with grit etc sticking to it?

critical to know which sunroof.

there are 2:

early discos have one with a knob at the back which you wind to lift it up,
and the panel of this can be lifts out and removed with a certain amount of
fiddlin'.

later ones have tilt/slide roof with a handle in front of the roof, one turn
of the handle raises it, more turns slide it back.


on early ones, the glass sits on rubberoid seal and any crud on it or any
damage to the seal will make it leak.

on later ones, they don't per se seal, they just fit reasonably in a hole in
the roof - the bit underneath in the headlining is a waterproof tray with
drain pipes which go down the door pillars somewhere. If these block, water
fills the tray bit and spills into the cabin.

The drain pipes are almost certainly blocked as there is water lying in the
sunroof frame. Where exactly are the drain points in the frame? Do I need to
remove the head lining?

I understand they go down the door pilars, I may however be wrong.. check
the exits aren't crudded up.

Mr Muscle oven cleaner I'm told works a treat at unblocking them. Give then
a rodding with some 30 amp car wire.. flexible enough to work it's way down
the hose but firm enough to prod out the gunk.

No, but I know the tube runs horizontally under the offside alpine window
then down the rear offside corner. Pull off the speaker panel and you should
see it. Remove plastic surround to alpine window (seat belt bolt and push
fits) to see more of pipe. You might get away with not having to remove the
roof lining.

if your disco is a 300 series if you go to a peugot dealer they sell a
sunroof glass seal for a 106 this apparently fits a disco as read injune
2004 issue of lroi
