My 2017 Discovery Sport has had steering rack failure, driving on the motorway, a noise started then the there was no power steering, it was very frightening trying to wrestle the Disco through 3 lanes of traffic to get to the hard shoulder, it's the usual aluminium bolts breaking that has caused the problem. 2017 Discos under a certain VIN were having the steering racks replaced, the normal failures were the aluminium bolts breaking, but even though my bolts have broken because the VIN is above whatever JLR have specified the main dealer (Charles Hurst Belfast) will not fix it under the recall, unless I pay them which is around £4000

Has anyone else had this problem?

You'll be joining a que for that lad. It is as you now know, a known but not always recognized issue with a few Jlr vehicles... It's pretty poor really and it does nothing for their reputation..
I honestly don't know what to say to help but I do feel you 🙁

It happened to my Jaguar F-Pace which has the same parts. We were on holiday in Wales at the time and I was able to wrestle the car back to the hotel from where it was recovered to our local Jaguar garage. Fortunately we have an extended warranty as the bill would have been ~£4,350. In some case the motor can jam completely and you lose all steering, so we were both quite lucky in that respect. Given it is such a well known and widespread problem across a number of JLR models their response doesn't encourage brand loyalty.

Unfortunately, for such a heritage to be lost to economy and bad decisions 😩

In that case, there should be a world wide recall of every vehicle fitted with the sh1t design fault.
It can only be a matter of time before it causes a fatal accident.
