Hi all, I'm about to order loads of service items for my Disco, I've got the three filters all belts and a tensioner, new water pump, and thermostat. I'm wondering if it's worth changing the glow plugs aswell as mine tends to blow smoke for 2-3 seconds form a cold start up, and I'm hoping this mite help cure it.

Has anyone done a timing belt at home on there drive? Will i need special tools, or should i just hand all the parts to a garage, and let them get on with it?

ive just ordered all the same parts too going to give it a go myself only thing im worried about is messing timing up we will never learn giving it to a garage if you get yours done before my bits turn up let me know how it went
 
Good luck to both of you servicing your Disco for the first time.

Most of the stuff is very straightforward and the only piece of advice I would offer is; don't rush the job, do one bit at a time and finish it before moving onto the next bit and be methodical.

When doing oil changes on the gearbox, transfer box and axles, I find this handpump available from most diy places, VERY useful for getting the new oil in.

ChipsV8 - I would hold off the glowplugs until you've done the service, it might improve things for you.

If both of you do the work yourselves, you'll see how straightforward it is, you'll learn loads about your cars and feel proud of yourselves.

Thanks thebiglad, encouragement is always welcome I was hoping to find a guide on here but no luck - suppose I'd better go buy a Haynes manual aswell huh?

If I remember I'll get some pictures and do a step by step. That's if anyone's interested?
 
Yes please chipv8, I also need to do a full service and cambelt on mine and really want to give it a go myself. It would be very helpful. Good luck to you and I hope everything comes off and goes back on easily!
 
step by step for the timing belt would be of use to some peeps. big tip.........once yer have timed it and yer think its right just crank it over with the pulley first, if somthings gonna hit yer piston at least yer only using a crack bar and not the starter motor.

Hi there chip, I would buy a Haynes manual if I were you because, generally speaking, the style and pictures in it make it easy to follow, if you're not too familiar with servicing these vehicles and it's only about a £10.

Wonder if the EGR,decat,engine breather e.t.c. should be touched upom here??
 
if its the first time you have done a timing belt then you need to take your time the only things you need are a 9.5 mm drill bit as a looking pin and one of them cheepe torque wrench (not a clickey one) to tension the belt can be done with out removing the radiator but it may be a good idea to take it out so you can see the timing marks a good breaker bar to get the crank pully off is a good idea (wedge it against the steering box and flick the sterter) make sure that the timing marks are in the right place after the belt is fitted and tensiond up that is the most important bit and turn the engine over at least 2 turns with a spanner before starting it
