Hi Guys,

congrats on a great forum.
I'm thinking of chopping my toyota hilux surf in for a discovery sometime soon and was wondering what your thoughts were on 300tdi's vs V8's with an LPG conversion.

i used to have a Series 3 swb landy and loved it but it wasn't practical enough. i'd now like to get a disco. I'm thinking of a 96/97 age one. Are the 300tdi's capable of high mileage if well looked after? this was my first choice but then i thought about the V8's with an lpg conversion. Anyone here had any experience with this engine. i've heard its a nice engine. But are there any problems with it when converted to lpg? i've had a look around and there are some about, some with quite high milages tho. Is the V8 reliable? and does it stay so after about 90,000 miles?

Also anything in particular i should look out for on these models when looking at them.

many thanks for your help in advance.

Cheers
Mark

Hi Mark,
I have just bought a 97 300tdi with 90k on it, and i'm very pleased with it. Before that I had a 92 200tdi that had about 160k on the clock when I got rid of it and the engine was still sweet as a nut. I think the 300tdi engine has a similar reputation for longevity, provided it has regular oil changes (and cambelts). If you go for a 97 you should be ok with the famous 300tdi throwing the cam belt off trick. They sorted the problem by then. The 300tdi has very good fuel consumption for big heavy truck. With 2 horses in the trailer i can get about 25 mpg on a good run. It tows beautifuly as well. My friend has a 96 V8 with an lpg conversion and he loves it. And says he gets pretty good mpg. he has to travel a bit to refuel as lpg garages are bit rare around here.

Cheers

Nick

Hi, can anybody help i have a disco TD5 which has suddenly developed a misfire has any body else had the same problem any fixes. please

Could be a blocked injector. Try running some diesel system cleaner through it. If not, with it being a TD5, you may need to take it to your dealer so that they can put it on their diagnostics machine.

first thing to look at is the engine ecm, take off the battery cover and remove jack undo 1 10mm nut holding the earth strap down.unscrew phillips screw lift out ecm and check inside red connector is there any oil as disco 2 suffer with oil running down the inside of the injector wiring loom so that it causes bad running missing injectors, you did not say age or mileage it might help me but im gueesing about w reg 80k?

thanks for the reply, i have checked the ecu and it seems dry, we went out Sunday and it started to misfire it felt like it was running on four cylinders and the Gear Knob was shaking.

Hi when you turn the ignition off does it run ok for a while or is it the same, they sometimes have problems with the injector loom which sits in the head but normally its oil induced,if you take off the top cover 3 13mm bolts look at the front of the head nearside there is a connector this is your harness output from the injector loom check there 2 see if its dry,if it is not sure what else to suggest, apart from plugging it in

hi, ive got a disco 200tdi 1991 i think. can anyone tell me how i go about getting more mpg. as o far to a full tank im only getting 400 miles. cheers. mark

In answer to the question of LPG by the OP, don't bother.
I have thrown fistfulls of money away on a Disco 11 conversion that has been less than satisfactory for to much of the time. Members of the LPGA are simply unable to cure the problems and have now taken to rubbishing the Land Rover badge itself. Strangley, they don't turn customers away until they have forked out for a conversion and lined their pockets.
