Quest is still on going for something suitable for the wife to pull horse box -currently got a Freebe which ain't up to it. Was looking orginally at a D2 but prices of the D3 starting to come into my range. Don't read a lot of post on here about them - can I assume they are much more reliable than the old one? Although them seesm to be jam packed with stuff to go wrong!

Would I be looking at similar running costs to a MK3 range?

Assumption, the mother of all....

I understand the D3 is so computer controlled that it's not something you could do anything to, when it breaks. Therefore it's to the stealers every time!

Took a D3 out for a Land Rover Experience day, what a car, like a motorised playstation! Brilliant at everything we tried.

However, when they explained about the uber complex cross valve technology for the suspension and apologised that the electric handbrake didn't work because it doesn't like dirt, my interest waned a little.

I'll stick with my pair of older ones, at least I understand them!

Rangie! 1994 soft dash 300tdi!..........i know what you mean. been looking at replacing the disco 2 and saw a 03 plate rangie td6 vogue and thought wow! at £12,000 what a bargin... then thought what happens when it goes wrong

Get a tops condition 300 tdi. Second best a tops condition TD5 as late as you can get. Disco 3 is a nightmare. It's going to be flop as a LandRover. Posers' cars.

Pay extra for sunroofs - the fewer it has the more you might pay. My Disco2 has NONE!

Autos are great for towing as long as you keep an eye on gearbox oil temp.

My TD5 manual has no problems at 6 tons gross as long as I drive sensibly and smoothly.

It happily copes with towing the big 4 wheel trailer with another Disco on top. Any way you look at it this can't be far off six tons. Hey, maybe it's more .... ssshhhh...... !

Disco trick is treat it gently all the time. You can even do that when it's working hard. Hashing and bashing and thrashing will soon kill any car, but especially Landies with their complicated transmission systems.
