Morning all,
So, the other half and I have been talking........
I have a repeat showing from the three amigos on my D2 which has prompted her to suggest I replace the D2 and my Passat B6 estate and get something a bit newer and more reliable. Shes also suggested she sells her car and we reduce our fleet down to two :D, and have a 4x4 and a smaller everyday car.

Now, her first suggesting for a 4x4 was a BMW X5, so you can guess what I told her to do with that idea!! So, I suggested going for either a D3 or a Range Rover Vogue. My thinking, I still want something I can take green laning, so I'm favouring the D3.

I'm looking to get an idea of day to day running costs, what you pay for things like servicing etc.
Also, some stories about how you find them away from the tarmac, and if you use them for green laning, whats fuel economy like there?

Admittedly, I've not even started to look into mods yet, but guessing they'll be more expensive than the D2. First thing would definitely be a snorkel and a decent set of A/T tyres.

First of, I would join the D3 dorum and spend a few days reading, then make your own mind up.

LZ disco section is good for the older models but doesnt even scratch the surface with any of the newer kit.

Top one, cheers Lynall. I remember it being mentioned on another thread before, but didn't have time to go looking for it, so many thanks, for the link.
Depending on what we get for all three cars, it may be an earlier D3 we go for. I will read up on the D3 forum though, cheers.

We just upgraded to a d3 from d2 and luv it. Running costs are erm okish 21 mpg around town 31ish on a run i do my own servicing its early days yet. Fitted a new air pump full service including cam belts and oil pump.
Thats just to start with nothing else planned or needed....go for it

Cheers bud. Going on that fuel consumption is probably very similar or slightly better than my D2. The mud terrain tyres and other mod's adding weight to it don't help economy. Thinking, if I do go for it, I'd want to fit all terrain tyres and a cb, but not worried about any of the other mods.
from what I've been reading last night, it seems it would be an upgrade both on the road and green laning.

When it needs new boots im fitting toyo open country at+ iv been doing some research. ..they will do nicely

I work for Hankook as an engineer, I'll be fitting the Dynapro A/T next, whether it be on the D2 or a D3. The M/T's are amazing, but the A/T are supposed to be awesome too. Plus, I'll get a good discount on already competitively priced tyres. :D

D3/4s really like their tyres, push the car hard and the tyres have to work overtime, doesnt take long for them to lose their edge and start to suffer from oversteer.

Cant seem to find them in 19inch, which is probably the most common tyre size on the D3, especially on the higher spec models which is most of them.

Oh bugger!!! I must admit, I've not checked the tyre size yet. If I can't get Hankook, I'll look at Genreral Gabber A/T or BF Goodrich.
Although I must admit, I'd probably prefer 17" or 18" rims on a D3

Iirc theres a problem with the GGs wearing away the alloy wheel rim so badly it literally turns into a knife edge.

Bf Goodrich KO2 on 17’s drive very nice on a D3, (265/70/17).
I took my 19’s off as it’s nicer on the 17’s

Thats the one!!! Damned good tyre!!! I'm going to check what our 'staff' prices are on them. Can't see me having to pay more than £70 a tyre. Currently, for a 245/70R16 for the D2, I'm paying about £55.
That said, for retail prices, Camskill are generally pretty good. HAd dealings with them during my time here and at Bridgestone, good bunch of lads.
