Discovery 3 Manual Gearbox XYZ Sensor Failures

I have a manual Discovery 3, I noticed a Park Brake failure warning on the dash fault screen, plus a yellow warning light. These other faults appeared at the same time :
1. Rear parking sensors failed
2. Reverse lights failed
3. Gear selector screen on dash is blank at low speeds, and takes a few seconds to show gears on the move

My local dealer fixed it for me by re-calibrating the sensor. They tell me that any small clutch slip will cumulatively knock the sensor out of calibration. Apparently before they realised the issue, they replaced 2 clutches under warranty, which did not fix the issue, and they were no reimbirsed by LR, in fact it appears LR call this regular wear and tear.

The clutch slip could be anything minor like a pull away from the lights in 1st and you momentarily let the clutch come up too slowly, which how ever careful you are could happen may be once a year on any car doing 12k a year. On that basis any owner is going to see a bill for at least 1 fix a year at around £70 plus a year.....

Is this normal wear and tear ? I think not, it is a fault with the calibration of a sensor, and a design fault from LR, which they have not admitted to. Either they should be fixing it for free, or putting out a recall fix to cure it permanently

How often does it occur ? The local dealer tells me they have had cars with as low as 15k with the fault. My fault occurred at 28k, now again at 35k.

Does any know if the Freelander 2 has the same issue ? I guess it could do, as it has similar technology.

Has anyone else been victim to this issue - would be good to see how often it is arising ?

Did they update the transfer case software? It is a well known issue. Requires new software, then sensor recalibration.

If they have already replaced the clutch assy, then it should have had the newer heady duty clutch fitted. Would also be asking if they replaced the flywheel at the same time...
As for normal wear and tear, LR issued a tech. bulletin about clutch slip etc, and was to be done under warranty

If the clutch is OK though, and not slipping, and it has the software update done, then you are looking at a new sensor, which requires gearbox removal again, unfortunately...

If you are still having grief with it, head over to DISCO3.CO.UK • Index Plenty of knowledgeable people over there, and even some with Autologic/BBS diagnostics who would be able to have a look at it for you if the dealer keeps fobbing you off

Hey thanks for the reply !

No the local dealer did not update software, they just recalibrated it. I am not sure they are aware of it, so will tackle that with them. So I am guessing from what you are saying that this software update is supposed to widen the sensor tolerance, and remove the issue ?

I don't suppose you know when this software update was issued by LR - my car is an 07 ? Just wondering when it would have been released and included into production cars.

The tech. bulletin states that the transfer case software needs updated BEFORE the re-calibration is done, otherwise the fault will re-occur

AS for the update, there have been many updates to the IDS systems, hard to say really when it was...

Hi, i had this problem a few times until they changed the fly wheel, under warranty, i have a 57 plate XS Disco, now i am having suspension problems (What next!!)

select low ratio drive of in first let your foot of clutch completely
push clutch pedal to the floor select second foot of clutch completely
same again all gears up to six low put in reverse foot of clutch completely hey presto you just saved £70

hi had trouble with hand brake warning light staying on and no reverse lights and slow to show gears on dash did as you said fault fixed thanks alot as garage had not been able to fix

Hi.... heres my very first post , with fear in my wallet i logged onto locate a dealer to look at my Mk3 tdv6. Having just tried to change down from 5th to 3rd on a slip road for a little more oomph I manged to slip the clutch and create exactly the same fault listed above.... I contacted the garage where i purchased the old girl, to be meet by a indifferent technician who just wanted to "book me in " for a diagnostic...
But I searched the web and found this site.... i even found this string above , Then I followed rw3628uk 'S guide and sorted the problem driving round the block , no time off road and no garage bill... MANY THANKS . GREAT HELP.

This is my first ever posting on a forum anywhere !!!!! but I have to thank rw3628uk for saving me a shedload of money with his do-it-yourself re-calibration of the sensor on my Disco 3 gearbox,God knows how he 'discovered' it (no pun intended). When you think how easy it is to slip the clutch and inadvertantly cause the fault the man/woman's a genius !!

Hi sorry to sound a bit thick here but can someone take me through this slowly step by step I've just bought a disco 3 and am very new to 4x4 terms, I.e low gear? And do you drive the car through all the gears in low and then stop and drive it in reverse - can someone put this into easy terms - many thanks and sorry for my being a bit wet behind the ears!!!!

like to thank bob.(rw3628uk)on phoning me and going through the problems i was having with my discovery, its now sorted, hes a star
thankyou again..it really does work
one happy man kenny

rw3628uk Thank you very much.. how on earth did you discover this? Took 20 seconds to fix it. I'd have spent longer than that booking it in on the phone.

Eureka it really does work... all these years paying for the internet, it's finally paid for itself!!!

Hi yes I have just brought a 2007 manual Discovery 3 with 77k on the clock. It has exactly the same faults as you have described, the dealer is replacing the sensor as we speak which apparently involves dropping the gearbox. How easy is it to recalibrate?

select low ratio drive of in first let your foot of clutch completely
push clutch pedal to the floor select second foot of clutch completely
same again all gears up to six low put in reverse foot of clutch completely hey presto you just saved £70
thank you rw3628uk for your tip on gearbox xyz sensor failures
my amber handbarke light staying on and no reverse lights
carried out the procedure you suggested

select low ratio drive of in first let your foot of clutch completely
push clutch pedal to the floor select second foot of clutch completely
same again all gears up to six low put in reverse foot of clutch completely

and everything is working
cheers

Hi,

I followed your advice to the letter and I still get the light coming on. I am getting a message that says that the hand brake is not auto-releasing. I guess if the simple reset has not worked it means I have a real fault that needs fixing?

thanks
Tim

All you first posters please put a post in the introductions part of the forum before the resident forum rotvillers get to you!

Pleased you have found a solution to what is clearly a common issue, really dont know what land rover were thinking producing such complex electrics on what is supposed to be an off road/workhorse type of vehicle. I'll keep my D2.......................

I have had this problem for months now and my local garage tried but failed to sort it out. Just back back from trying the fix that rw3628uk suggested and still on shock as it worked first time. Many thanks for that post very happy Dundee man.
