Hi,we are a new member.we not long purchased a commercial disco 2td5 and when we got it home we found the oil level very high.we took alot of oil out using an oil vac.all seemed to be ok.got a full service kit ordered.when driving home we came to pass a tractor and trailer of which we did in 3rd gear.all of a sudden a lot of black smoke bellowed out the back and the engine started to rev upwards to roughly 4000 rpm.in sheer panic I turned the key of and hastily parked in a gateway. When I opened the bonnet there was no oil anywhere but saw the coolant bottle bubbling and overflowing. The temp gauge on dash was reading just below normal running temp.got towed home as afraid to start the engine.a mechanic came out to look and tried to start the truck for it to only turn over and not fire. I have checked the turbo to find its freely moving. Have found a 40 amp blade fuse blown in fuse box by ecu (f5 I think).do hope the head has not cracked as unfortunately don't have the funds for that due to buying the truck.any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. whats the oil level like now? there alot of people on here that know alot more than me but think if injector seals go or crack in head diesel can down through the cylinder into oil and oil level goes up, once it reaches a high level it gets forced back up into cylinder and starts to feed the engine making the engine rev some-times to distruction, I hope that if it is this it is the seals but as you also have water being forced out of bottle would think it might be the head cracked, I hope some-one can come up with a better simpler and cheaper answer
 
Hi ,thanks for reply. I am expecting it to be the head which if confirmed we'll have to sell it as spares.there doesn't seem to be any water in the engine oil which I thought it to be just the gasket gone .if we'd have realized there were so many electronics helping to run the engine we wouldn't had bought it. We had our series 3 on the road for 17 yrs(petrol) and no major problems and simple to fix.cheers.

Perhaps a bit of research before you bought it?

Depends on your persuasion, I'd get it fixed even if I merely parked it on the drive with the plates off it until I had the cash, no point selling it broken as you'll lose a bucket of cash and might get £300? Maybe less? Seen broken ones on the bay of e going for very little money.
 
The Td5 is generally a pretty good engine, but like any other engine it does require looking after.
By the sound of it you suffered from "diesel runaway" where fuel has got into the sump causing the level of the contents to increase to the point of being forced up into the cylinders and burning, instead of the fuel finding its way into the engine by the normal route. The usual result of diesel runaway is sadly a knackered engine. If you managed to stop it in time then you might be lucky but it does seem that the cylinder head has a crack in it probably between the fuel rail and an oilway.
Yes, the Td5 does use more electronics to control things than in the days of old, but that's the way of things these days.
The first clue which should have been investigated was the level of "oil" in the sump. If it ever goes above the full mark without you knowing exacty the reason why, say you slightly overfilled the sump, it should be investigated carefully.
The temperature gauge on the Disco 2 Td5 doesn't actually show the temperature of the coolant, just that it's cold or warm. By the time it shows overheating, the damage has already been done. This subject has been covered fairly comprehensively just recently.
