Hi all,
Quick question - i have play (not excessive -yet) in the steering on my 1993 200Tdi - i have recently replaced all the rod/drag link ends etc and beleive that i have traced the play to the steering box itself - there are no leaks on the box and no air in the system. So i assume its either excessively worn internally or badly adjusted. I replaced the box just over 2 years (12k) ago with an exchange reconditioned unit from paddocks (perhaps i should have bought new). So my question is - is it worth trying to adjust the box by slackening the nut on top and tightening the allen key head screw (and if sucessful how long will it take before the play is apparent again) or do i bite the bullet and replace it with new or good second hand one?
Any advice greatly received.
Cheers
Andy

Got my '93 200TDi just last week - steering issue with mine is that always wants to pull to left - I have to hold steering wheel at approx 1 o' clock to keep straight - cud be tracking or summat more serious:confused: What yer think guys?

Hi guys,
Quick update - adjusted the box last night - 3 flats down on the allen key screw - the freeplay in the steering has now gone and the slightest movement on the wheel now moves the drop arm on the bottom of the box - so the steering is probably now as good as its going to be for a disco. Feels much safer at speed - no constant adjustment required to tell where your wheels are.
Cheers

just a quick question

i took the top off the steering box to change the o'ring
and now have a bit of play, but when i adjusted the allen back up, it seems tight(the allen bolt) but has some excessive play still which it didn't so how tight should it feel as i do it up?

you should only adjust when pas box is central as the tightest part in its arc is the center ,adjust allen screw while rocking input shaft and take out all free play try steering from lock to lock ensure not to tight thru center and freeplay gone when central tighten nut ensuring allen screw doesnt move
