Discovery 2004 issues

Slipping or jumping out of gear is a selector issue, could just be a detent spring or two bust.
Graunching into gear is a syncromesh issue. Sounds like this motor had a tough former life!
Winey droney noise sounds like it is also gearbox related. (Probably bearings and/or general wear and tear). If you think it might be the transfer box, I'd put it in low range and drive it about about. If the sound is different it might be the transfer box, if it remains the same it's probably the actual gearbox.
So, bad news I'm afraid. wish I could give you an easy answer.
Water in the vehicle is due to leaks, sunroof(s) first likely culprit but coming in the doors during a carwash could be a sign of accident damage.
I await other more authoritative answers but that's what I would go for.
If the gearbox is stuffed then what is the engine like?

4th isnt a gear like the rest its connecting input shaft with main shaft direct, this becomes a problem the front m/s bearing is failing as they can move as they arent tightly supported

oil changes then, after awhile its 2.7 litres of dirty oil lubing a box pulling a 2 ton truck

You're water leak down the centre posts may just be the door seals need pushing back into place. Mine leaked there and the water ran into the front seat belt, the cure was a simple push up in the corner of the door seal.

Depending on what it was used for, shoving 200bhp through a standard box may be part of the trouble, a secondhand box may start OK then get to the place this one is in, and it also could not have had the oil changed as per J Martin says. You could get a secondhand box, change the oil, drive it gently while getting your own box reconned, but you have to hope the box itself isn't damaged beyond the point of making a decent recon possible. Or you could buy a good recon box from a reputable place, maybe even a strengthened one from someone like Ashworths. Depends how deep your pockets are and what you want to do with it.

Seal up alpine windows, gutters and front screen seals (plus rack legs also) with quality exterior sealant. Tape up sunroof with gorilla tape and seal where plastic meets roof with your sealant. This will sort it. For a bit. That wont fix the gearbox though.
