hi all
currently own a p38 4.6 1996 auto on lpg......
have had major problems with overheating thinking of cutting my losses and buying a disco 2 td5 pos 2002 onwards ......
am i mad or digging a deeper hole ?????????????????

I've never owned a P38.....wanted to but warned off by so many people i actually took advice for a change.

I've owned my TD5 for two years, paid the right price and expected some issues. Done 20,000 miles in it, now at 90,000 and this is the list;

Fuel Pump - a regular problem I gather but easy to sort and under £200.

Engine Loom - Not just the injector one, I had to change the whole thing because of oil, about £300 from memory. An extreme case.

ACE Pipes - Ouch! I got a LR specialist to do it, about £400.

That's it other than normal servicing and tyres. I think it's a great car and it still looks good value, I'd certainly buy another. As usual, buy the best you can!

It's a shame you have to get rid of the range rover, can't it be sorted. Sometimes the overheating can be something simple. Have you had it looked at?
If you decide to buy a disco2, get a one on the latest plate possible, make sure it has a full service history and get it checked over by someone in the know. There are a number of problems common to the td5, do your research and check these items out! Check all the toys work properly and take it on a very long test drive as it can take a while for problems to manifest.
At least the problems with you rangie haven't put you off buying another landrover.

Steve I got warned off P38 and persuaded into an 02 V8 LPG disco 2. Been absolutely delighted until recent issues with MAF causing intermittent stalls and misfires. Main Stealer fixed it for me as I got recovered there. Now runs well again.
Like a lot of people I get the three amigos but I figure that I'll notice when:eek: it doesn't stop right

18 months 20, 000 miles and vey happy too.

I've owned my Discovery 2 TD5 2002 MY from new, and the only fault it has presented that wasn't ordinary wear and tear was the injector harness.

They seem pretty reliable to me.
 
The older engines, particularly the V8's seem to be problematical as old age comes on them, but in many cases it is lack of attention that causes most problems, not the actual machinery.

How many people don't put the correct 50/50 mix of OAT antifreeze in the cooling system? If you don't use it, the aluminium in all of the engine and the radiator just furs up with corrosion.

Bleeding the radiator properly is another matter that rarely gets the attention is deserves.

Checking water levels regularly? Hands up, who actually DOES check their water level daily or even weekly?

At 13 years old, it's probably time to look for a newer vehicle anyway, but there's often a lot of life in the old vehicles if looked after.

I had a classic range rover 3.9, very reliable car, but couldn't live with the fuel bills at the time, so i sold it and bought a disco td5. It was strange at first, as the range rover was a lot smoother, being a v8 auto. The only real problem i had with the disco was the air suspension (done under warranty). Still wish i could have kept the rangie as well though!
 
I agree with Lister there. As good as those V8s are, they do need to be maintained well. Overheating is a big issue with these engines (and it's not just rover V8s). I always did oil changes before it was needed, and kept an eye on the coolant. I bought my rangie with 89,000 on it and put 35,000 more on it with no problems at all. It's still the most reliable landrover i have owned.
