My 2003 discovery 2 is having starting issues. It takes ages when cranking the engine in a morning to start when it does start it has loads of white smoke coming out of the exhaust for a short while and clears.been serviced recently had a recon turbo done injector seals new fuel filter just made it harder to start any suggestions what I should be trying next???????

I was once told you can test a glow plug by simply putting it across a battery and seeing how long it takes to heat up, bit crude I know, but is this a valid test? I used it and they all heated up ok, so i left them in.

First of all you have to check if the plugs are getting feed which means to unplug one(no matter which) hook a voltmeter across the lead and head and watch it when you turn ignition on...if you get voltage the circuit is ruled out then unplug them all and measure resistance across theyrs terminals and head, a good one should read very close to 0.9 Ohm... the glow plug warning lamp is managed by the ECU based on ECT input it comes on even if the fuse is blown or the relay is removed

So, if you actually take the glow plug out and use a jump lead or similar to connect the glowplug across a battery to see how long it takes to heat up, is that a good test or not?

The test is relevant to show if the plug is OK but IMO it's not a good ideea cos if the plug is good then you took it out in vain, with the resistance check method if it reads well you can leave it be and seems easyer to touch it with a multimeter's probe than remove it

Thanks @sierrafery , nice to know that for once I wasn't doing wrong, although, as you say not the neatest or quickest way of testing it.

change the bleed valve in the filter housing, td5 doesn’t need glow plugs to start from cold unlike other diesels but they do aid with starting and reduce emissions

Would this make it harder to start??
Yes it would make it difficult to start, other things include the fuel pump injector seals and washers, the crank sensor, battery, and starter motor, have you had it on a diagnostic machine yet?

Hi guys,
I am having the same problem. Has the issue been resolved. If so can you share what was done to fix the issue at hand.
Thanks
