Hi all,

Little question I'm hoping will be an easy one for somebody in the know?? I need to replace one of the rear UJ's on the front prop shaft of my Discovery TD5 maunal 1999. The UJ's are available on the net and are listed as " can be used on either end of the front or back prop shaft" My question is, is this true? as my local shop (LR Centre in Liverpool) are telling thats not the case. I phoned up to order them and they said the rear 2 ( in the double cardan joint) are not replaceable? I know there are a few guides on here and discovery2.co.uk shows a guide to replace them all? Has anybody come across this before?

Thanks in advance for any help anybody may be able to offer.

Thanks David, that's the guide i will use to do the job, but are all three UJ's the same part no.? I believe, and a lot of things I'm reading (including the link)would suggest they are. Whilst they're relatively cheap and i could just try them, its not the money i don't want to waste, its the amount of time I'm off the road. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew the guy in the shop was wrong! I'll order some tomorrow. What's the thoughts on removing the prop and engaging the diff lock temporarily until they turn up? I've read the three amigos will rear their ugly heads again if I do this? Not a problem really, the cabin seems quite dark of a night now that they're gone this time anyway :)

No problem removing front prop and driving around with CDL engaged.
However, I wouldn't be driving it hard (flooring it away from junctions etc) just drive "casually".

Shouldn't get 3 amigos come on, no reason for them to, unless there's another issue.

HTH.

Little update just in case anybody has a similar problem in future and comes across this thread....

The UJ's are indeed all the same (despite 3 different "specialists" being adamant that the rear of the front shaft can't be replaced).
The centre bearing was a problem and fell apart, likely due to the rattling around for a week before i found the problem. I replaced it as it is available to buy (why if it can't be replaced??)
She drove ok with the CDL engaged, you could tell you were being pushed by the back wheels especially with being lifted it nose dives when you let off the accelerator etc. but was useable although down on power.
The traction control light and ABS light do light up ( as well as the CDL light) but do go straight off when the CDL is disengaged and all wheels are being driven (ABS/TC still works)
Thanks to all posters above who have saved me the cost of a new propshaft! Total cost of repair around £50
