Discovery 2 auto doesnt down gear?

Hi everyone, hope your all well, I'm a new one to this forum and was hoping someone could shine some light for me please. I had a 2004 manual discovery 2 landmark which sadly was no longer road worthy so i upgraded to a 2002 metropolis auto which is an absolute peach for the year. However when I'm setting off it will go through the gears like it should but when ever i come off the accelerator it knocks itself out of gear and starts free rolling and then when starting to slow down it doesn't down gear at all i just have to brake?? Is this normal for the auto box or is something a miss?? It just doesn't seem right too me and anyone I've asked is only familiar with the manual box. Any information would be really appreciated.
