Hi all,
Ill soon be in the market for a Discovery, but would like help and advice on which model 1 or 2.
A neighbour of mine has a 300tdi and obviously recommends that particular model. He advises me to steer clear of TD5's, he tells me nuts/bolts have come loose and ended up inside engine causing death. Whereas his sale pitch for the 300tdi is it is so much simpler and easy to work on even for hobby mechanics.

It just seems to be a minefield out there, if they don't have problematic engines, the they have rusty chassis, if not that then rotted bodywork. Is there a good all rounder?

Hello and welcome.

Is there a good all rounder?

Depends on what you want from it, If you mean is there a clear winner for a better buy between the two then No, IMHO.

Read up as much as you can and make a wise buy, take someone with you.

In a reply to what your neighbour said. "how good is his bodywork", A lot of D1's are as rotten as a pair of Baldricks socks...Buy very carefully whichever you buy. Each version has its own pros and cons. D2's chassis can be rotten, but bodies seem to fare better.

You would be better posting in the disco section for something like this. here is a brief buyers guide for a D2, does not cover all options available.

Disco 1 mainly bodywork rots through, disco 2 it's the chassis to be mindful of, particularly the rear.

I found the disco 2 easy enough to work on, they're both big and heavy so bit of brute force and safety consciousness when lifting/supporting while you're under both.

Don't let disco 2 electrics out you off, loads of diy diagnostics about (Hawkeye, nanocom etc)

The bolt your pals on about on td5 engined disco 2 is the oil pump sprocket bolt. Some weren't fitted with thread lock on assembly bolt comes loose and caused much woe and heartache. Simple to check whip sump off and replace bolt with threadlocked one.

Check out buyers guides on here for both, I think @neilly did one for disco 2.

Best all rounder/daily driver would be disco 2 imo

Edit @neilly wins fastest finger first :D

Nothing wrong with Td5 if they have been well looked after.
Both are prone to rot, but D1s are older, so it is harder to find a rust free one.
If I was going to get another, I would get a Disco 2 V8.

A D2 V8 sped past me on the peage heading towards Calais today. Must have been doing 75-80mph. Petrol filler cover was flapping about in the wind. Made us laugh, imagining it was desperate for a drink. :D

Having had a 300Tdi, I'd have a D2 TD5, get it sorted, and 'play' with the leccy and breathing on it.

mine will happily cruise at 70 or just as happy at 50 depends how much money is left in the bank for feeding her !
I never really check MPG tbh

Id go for a disco 2 personally. Td5 are as simple as any to maintain and service at home, despite the scare mongering.

D1 suffers very bad body corrosion which is extremely difficult to repair or prevent, whilst the D2 suffers rear chassis corrosion. Easier to weld up or chassis swap to galv, than lots of ime consuming body repairs! D2 everytime.
