discos axles into defender

Hi as per note before about my planned project to rebuilt a defender using galvanised chassis and td5 bulkhead and series 3 body etc however will the disco front and rear axles be alright to use in defender? for brakes and etc discos use 4 calipers etc when defender has shoes in rear.

Ive got both axles from my m reg disco under my b reg 90 now. BRakes are great an all!

when you do it...

(Assuming your disco axle is 24 spline)

You will probably have a 3 bolt Rotoflex coupling on the input to your rear diff.

To remove this...

Find a bolt that fits the hole in the nose in the middle of the flange.
Find a deep socket that is big enough to press on the flange around the nose.
Wind bolt in to pull out flange.
Then, unbolt the flange.

You will then need a 24 spline input flange, 4 bolt. You can get them. The chances are, you will also need the half inch or so spacer from the 4 bolt diff - this goes in under the flange and holds the bearing race in place. You DO need it.

Other than that, a pretty simple swap to be honest, me an a mate did mine in jus under a day, outside, in the rain, in bloody gale force wind.

Is it posible to use the front half of the defender prop and the back bit of the disco prop or dont they slide together.

i think the lengths are wrong.

Also i think the angle that a 90 rear prop is at would make the rotoflex rubber coupling fall apart very quickly.

i stuck a disco 1 rear axle on my 200tdi 90.
all round disk brakes are an improvement.

im also building a 90 using disco axles gearbox, engine etc, please could someone explain what propshafts fit?? as i quite confused, thanks matt

Then fit standard def props.

this is all a bit new to me, so we brought a 1984 defender 90, 2 1/4 petrol, basically for the bodywork and the paperwork

so are the props different off the petrol than a 300tdi.
so 300tdi defender props should fit?????

200TDi props are different from 300TDi/TD5 props due to the R380 box being slightly further forward. V8 props are different again, and so are 2.25 petrol.

If it's a Disco I axle, it's a straight swap, use standard Defender prop and it's OK. Disco II or newer has 3 bolt flange and rubber Donut thingy - Avoid. Soft dash Rangies have the same Disco II running gear and are not interchangeable with Deependers without a chew.

i fitted the 3 bolt disco axle to my 90 - the flanges aren't too hard to change. 24 spline diffs an all!

Mine was a late disco 1, (i think?)
