Car was serviced at LR for first 2 then local specialist for just the oil / filter change, all done to the book.
Genuinely think its a minor electrical or dash fault that doesn't show up on a diagnostics check but lead to oil levels not being monitored.
Also engine didn't run dry it still had between 2 & 3 litres in it.

then how did the engine seize up

oil pump failure

I don't get how he didn't know ............if your oil pump fails, unless your a total dipstick you'll know about it within a couple of miles .....sound ,heat, smell...

Fcuk am thick as pig **** but there's no way Ide drive a motor till it seized

dont forget, you are cocooned in a plush cabin away from sounds, smell, noise etc.big powerful engine etc etc.if it was feeling sluggish maybe he just put his foot down a bit more.

Oil level warning failure + low oil pressure warning failure does seem like very bad luck. Are these two sensors combined into one piece of kit in the Disco 4?

I love my Defender.

probably was,BUT if there was an electronic malfunction, then it might not have lit up.????

But we still have not managed to establish the cause of the low oil level in the first place, the OP keeps slipping in fresh bits to his tale of woe but it still does not add up for me.
I'm not familiar with the D4 but surely when the ignition is turned on all warning lights/ digital display should be there as a driver check prior to starting the engine, I know all the lights that should come on on my vehicle and I'd notice at once if one failed to light up.

yes i agree on that point, i also agree that all lights should function correctly but we are talking about a landrover here, they are not the best in the world regarding lectrickery are they.but who knows what really happened.just offering idea's,suggestions.

Plus it says to do the weekly oil check procedure in owners manual

When the ign is turned on the oil level sensor sends out a signal which bounces off the surface of the oil in the sump hence the depth of oil is measured. If the signal is missing a warning light will be on.
