Disco1 (95) clutch assist spring

Whilst changing the clutch master cylinder on my 95 Disco, I took out one side of the "clutch assist spring" (the spring in the middle of the clutch pedal) to make it easier to get out the clevis pin and spring clip. the other side of the clutch assist spring then came out by itself and promptly fell on the floor!! For the life of me I can't get the damn thing back, and I don't even know which way round the spring should be (straight on 1 side, kinked on other). Anyone got any good ideas? Would it really matter if I left the thing out - after all there is a spring on the top of the pedal and one in the clutch master cylinder. The pedal action would be a bit light though !! A working clutch (of sorts) would get it through an MOT though !!
