Turn the key dash lights come on, turn the key to start and get nothing but a click, so I assume it's starter motor, turn lights on to see if they dim when I turn the key and they don't, so I figure it's gotta be a bad earth to the starter, taken them off, scrubbed them back to get good contacts and still the same:mad:.

Any ideas, I really need this to get to work in the morning and it's now ****ing down so I'm gonna get wet fixing it:mad::mad::mad:.

sounds like its definately the starter...

take it off and give it a clean, before fitting again, test outside by shorting the solenoid and see if it spins...

if it doesnt...get a new starter

Try putting it in 1st gear (ignition off) rock the LR forward and back-may move the flywheel round a bit and then try starting-worth a try

That was gonna be my next step, I was just hoping someone would come up with a little bit of magic that would save me from being being out in the ****ing rain for the next couple of hours.:(:(

It started, THANK YOU!:D THANK YOU!:D THANK YOU!:D

that's the bit of magic I was looking for, at least I can now drive it to my mates workshop to fix it properly where it's dry:).

It,ll be the solenoid contacts worn out causing a bad connection.
If you just keep turning the key enough times it will turn !

You dont need a new starter motor, just the contacts off ebay for £ 9.95.

Disconnect the battery, undo the lead on the starter, 3 bolts and the starter,s off.
Take the end off the solenoid housing, ( 3 small bolts ). Then remove the plunger and see how spent the contact ring and contacts are, 2 nuts of to remove old contacts, put it all back in the same order with new points, stick the new plunger in, solenoid cover back on, starter back on the car, ( dont worry if you dont fit the top bolt, it wont hurt ! ), connect lead and battery back up, and be really pleased with yourself that you didnt pay out for a new starter motor.
