Disco will not move

Hey,

first of all, "hi". I'd like to introduce myself but I'm not having a great time right now haha.

My 1993 3.5 V8i disco won't move. It'll start and go into gear, and it will drive in gear for about 1 foot before locking up and stopping. This happens in gear, out of gear, handbrake on or off, engine on or off... It rolls about a foot forward or backwards and then the wheel(s) lock up.

Do you think this is just the handbrake stuck on or am I looking at something more serious? More importantly, if it is serious how am I meant to tow it out of my underground car park when the wheels won't move haha!

Your handbrake has seized like mine ... got mine wet at the weekend and now I have to hit the drum with a hammer before I drive it. This happens even if I leave it in gear with the handbrake off! Strip and grease of the drum required at the weekend.

Haha so true.

I thought it was the handbrake too, but all my herculean strength could not hit it hard enough to make the damn car move.

Jacked the front axle up and it's the front right wheel that's catching on something. Funnily enough I had the front brake pads and discs changed on Tuesday, and the AA guy that just came out said it sounded and felt like something catching on the inside of the brake disc. If the garage that did it isn't willing to come out and have a look I'm pretty much buggered though, since it's parked in an underground car park and can't be towed out :(

I used the back of my hammer to tap the disc with the wheel on and it started rolling backwards farther, but still is not rolling forward. I think this AA man might be on to something.

Well take the wheel off and look at the pads. It might be something to do with that.

We did take the wheel off. Nothing obviously wrong with the pads or the caliper, but it certainly feels like something is catching on the disc. It's either that or my Diff is Forked. I hope it's not the latter.

Did you take the calliper off to be doubly sure? Don't know why but you have try every thing.

Have you tried putting the low/high ratio box into Neutral?

Haven't tried taking the caliper off but have tried playing with the transfer box with no result. It could be something strange with the caliper, you never know, but since it had its discs/pads replaced four days ago, and since I'm going back to the garage that did it on Wednesday for a £400+ job I would think they'd be willing to come out and fix it themselves... So I'll do that before I try to play around with the brakes myself. I usually leave the important things that could save my life (i.e. brakes) to the experts rather than playing with them myself.

Brakes are easy, even mechanics can be trained on how to do them.

I find that the last thing you touched is often the cause/catalyst for the next problem. If one of the monkeys failed to tighten up a bolt correctly, or even put the pads in then you might get an issue.

Ah but they're the one part of the car I've never tried adjusting haha. We'll see, if the garage isn't willing to help I'll have no choice but to do it myself.
But yeah I get what you're saying.

accywingy, I'm in Durham, but couldn't ask anyone to come help haha.

Ah I've had people help me before, but I've always gone to them and not the other way around haha... I know full well how generous land rover owners are, I learned to drive in a 130 defender out in Australia so I'm no stranger to mechanical issues and collaborative repair efforts haha. I just feel uncomfortable asking people to go out of their way to help someone they don't know (unless I'm paying for it).

Nah it's still not rolling. I'll probably start to do some more in-depth searching tomorrow. I'll also call the garage in question to see if they might be willing to help (if not, probably won't go back...)

P.S. don't know if I posted this before, but I tapped the disc with the end of a hammer and then was able to roll the damn thing back into its parking space... So it'll now roll backwards but not forwards.
