Disco - to buy or not to buy

hi everyone,
new member here..
well my trusty steed has kicked the bucket and i'm in the market for a cheap car.. pidly budget of around 2k (not much but times are hard!).. i quite fancy a discovery but im looking for a bit a bit of advice if you dont mind.. for 2k am i wasting my time or will i get something solid ?
not wanting to heavy off road just yet, just after something for the drive to work and something to put the dog in, maybe with a little weekend green lane use.
also any buying tips ? what to look for etc ?
