Erm, to cut a long story a bit shorter. I've got a disco 300tdi that I only normally use for laneing and if the weather gets bad.

I've just sold my car that I use the rest of the time because I wanted something flash that had space for the dog (a4 estate, v70 etc) but I can't help but consider getting a 90 as I've always fancied one.

I'm a bit stuck really though, yes I can afford it but why when I've already got a landy. on the other hand, a 90 would suit my lifestyle better than an estate. The main thing putting me off is the price, I'm looking at spending around 2.5 - 3k on a car - which'll get me a 90 about 5yrs older than my disco (so 1993-4ish) from what I've seen at least  my head hurts!

On top of this though, the 90s do seem to hold their value very well so I could always go for it and have a think about whether I've done the right thing or not - if not I've probably lost next to nothing and can still go for the estate instead. Obviously though, the landrover will get through more fuel than a diesel estate so will be more expensive to use daily.

Would I be right in thinking parts are about the same price as for the disco and what would you do in my shoes?

Couldn't really justify spending more than 3k on one, Though I am really coming round to the idea of going for it.

Would you say I'm right in thinking I can probably sell a 90 for the same as I paid for it if I change my mind after six months (especially if I do it up a bit)?

Example, an L reg'd 90 with mot but no tax and average miles - standard but solid, £2500

I tax it, fit lift springs, mud tyres, cb maybe more and give it a bit of a tidy up. But decide it's not for me after all. Total cost ~ £3000ish but over time, which matters.

You think I can get anywhere near that back? (only an example).

Get the 90. You know it's the right decision!

It will hold its value, but that won't matter, because you won't want to sell it :D

as much as it pains me to say it,if i were you id use the disco as a toy and get a 90 when it rusts out. And then having a car for every day road use. 3k will get you a lot of car and not a lot of 90. As nice as it is to drive a 90 every day, and i do, its a pain in the ass in the maiddle of winter on a cold morning or on a long drive in the hot summer.

for 3k you could do a lot of really nice things to your disco and have a more comfortable and refined daily driver.

The 90 makes more sense if you really want to take it to bits and customise everything.

sadly, that comes down to drive space - which is already a source of severe ear ache

Erm, I now own a 1993 90 200tdi pickup jobby - £1850, pretty happy with that! Just gotta go fetch it now - I'll be selling the disco in due course, unless I need a lot of bits to get the 90 up to scratch. In which case the disco'll become a donar car.

Yeah, depends what (if anything) is wrong though, if there's a lot- I think stripping the disco would be more cost effective we'll se though: I've yet to hear from the guy (online auction) so it might all fall flat on it's face anyway.
