Hi guys dont actually have a Land Rover yet but have always been brought up around them and i am looking to buy a TD5 Disco after the summer when i have the money. I am looking to spent about 5,000 to 7,500 max on one and was wondering if you can give me an idea as to what sort of Year, Spec and mileage, I can expect for this price range not to bothered about Facelift but would be nice.
Thanks
Also anything i should look out for.

I dunno about prices but if u are spending money anyway my advice is to get one with a central diff-lock fitted, download a RAVE untill then and learn at least the normal behaviour of the warning lamps on dashboard.....some people use to take out the warning LED's from the systems that are not working properly instead of letting them so and warn the byer about a problem which could lower the price......I'd go for a manual one too(I think that will be thwarted by thebiglad Dave:);))......

Yh i would like one but i am aware of all the hidden issues and faults that are common with this model and the fact that unless you ve got an hour to check it over and make sure everything works it is impossible to tell if you ve got a good deal or not. I have already had expierence with dodgy salesmen and no how you feel ;(

Oh, here's a couple of ideas:

Have a look at the ACE pipes - they'll probably be rusty anyway but any bodged repairs are worth noting.

Check the power steering box isn't dripping with fluid - another one I got shafted on!

Have a look under the bonnet, left side of the engine as you stand there - any sign of diesel dripping down the block? (Fuel pressure regulator, yeah, got shafted there too)

Look on the boot loadspace cover - any water stains? Sunroofs leak, yeah, got shafted there too - see a pattern?

On the plus side, I've fixed all these things and learnt quite a bit about my vehicle on the way!

David

Thanks for the tips will look out for these issues when i look to buy mine pleased to hear you got all your issues fixed apart from that is it reliable because that is one of the strong points of a land cruiser i am also considering looking for although i prefer the look and interior of the discos.
Thanks

Landcruiser should be more reliable but is boring as hell to drive. TD5 is quite reliable but expensive when it goes wrong. For the money you want to spend you ought to be able to get a fairly recent vehicle with a reasonable warranty.

I got a mint Disco 2 01 plate for 5k. Body, paint, interior all immaculate. Sunroof, back door, steering box and ACE valve block all leaked. The leaks are all original spec, and supplied by the manufacturer. My advice is go for the Disco, forget about the cost of runnin it, and you'll luv it, warts an all. Any A- Hole can run a Land Cruiser.

the td5 is not as you might assume inherently troublesome, if you can get one with a good history this is a start, look around here to gauge the usual likely faults, mine is a 2000 model 60k when i bought it a year or so ago manual, around 30 mpg, and it is a shoot wagon so gets some use as intended, no probs so far love it to bits, price was under 5grand from my local garage and they gave me more than i paid originally for my pajaro trade in .

I am gonna probably get slated for this :bolt:but - don't rule out Ebay! MY 03 cost £8000 2yrs ago with 60k on the clock. Couple of small probs. air bags:frusty: still on going?!?!? New fuel pump recently.
But plenty help off here;)
I have noticed that prices seem to be cheaper oop norf!:D.

Whatever you do - good luck.

my dads 02 plate GS also cost £8000 two years ago and had 55K on the clock, it has the usual leaks from the roof, and the power steering bust last year, and we've just noticed an engine oil leak. He uses it to pull a horse trailer and can't fault it (apart from the afore mentioned). I'd say definatley go for the Disco and forget the Land Cruser, only because i think they are much more cool and masculin.
