I guess this may have been discussed before, but what constitutes a high milage Discovery TD5? I've been in black cabs who claim over 500k miles, and would expect the TD5 to have similar long-lasting properties? Mines done 92k, I've owned it from new, and it's still all original (even brake pads) except "normal" servicing parts. It would be interesting to hear from owners who have done high milages in TD5's...?

If the engine is well looked after; oil and filter changed regularly, hasn't overheated, is given a little bit of a warm up period when it first starts in the morning before making it work hard then they should last well.

well tdi,s reach 200k and more regular.
i know some mercedes engines that reach 500k.
the things that kill engines are poor maintainance and short cold journeys. thats why a car thats done 100k motorway miles is a far better bet than a 50k car which is used for the school run and tescos.

when i see peeps get in their cars in the morning and race off like schumacker, it makes me want to weep. cold engines need a gentle touch until hot.
even better, let the engine get hot before driving.
take a lesson from aviation, we never move the cessna until its hot. a cold engine at take off can kill you!

Know what you mean, its horrible to see people thrashing a cold engine (bad enough when hot!). It must vary from engine to engine as I know the instructions from VW with my TDI are that you should drive it as soon as you start it, not let it idle to heat up.

I always let the engine idle for a minute after a journey in both the TD5 and the TDI to allow the oil to cool the turbo bearings prior to switching off, hopefully to obtain a longer engine life.

My owners manual says you should idle the engine for 10 seconds after a run, before switching off...I guess it's to let the turbo cool.
My oil is always good full syntetic, and it's still only using a cupful between services, which seems pretty good.
Anyone know how long exhausts last for? The Disco has already had a very good life, but I guess that's because it's diesel?
