Hi guys, I've got a problem with my gear box. It's an 03 auto and has been playing up for over a year. Spoke to a mech. today who thinks it might be getting stuck in 3rd.

Basically, when you start it up and rev the engine in neutral it revs up nicely. Once you put it into D and pull off it doesn't matter how far you push the accelerator it just pulls away very slowly, the rev. needle raises really slowly and then after between 5 and 15 secs. it kicks in and you shoot off.

Also when driving at about 30 if I lift off the gas and press down again I feel a sort of thud through the footwell:confused::confused:(can't compare so don't know if this is normal)

Finally when driving on the motorway, every now and again there is a kind of lull - as if you have lifted off the gas for a split second.:confused::confused:

Any ideas greatly received - especially if they involve a cheap fix.:D

Cheers

Rob

Hi Rob, if you've had this problem for a year I hope you haven't damaged anything in the process.

I think your mechanic may be right about it being stuck in 3rd.

Imagine for a second your are driving a manual gearbox car and you are pulling away in 3rd gear - it'll be very sluggish won't it?

So the question is, why is it stuck in 3rd? Well a std feature of these cars is that if there is an engine or gearbox problem, the car goes into "limp home" mode. As the name implies, it's just to get you home, so then you can fit it - it's not for driving for 12 months !!!!!

Do you have any warning lights coming up on the dashboard? Often the M & S lights on the dash will flash when a car is in Limp Home.

Hi big lad.

No lights. Due to the fact that from the first time it did it until today there has never been any codes show up when put on diagnostics. I know it sounds extreme to carry on driving but when no-one can diagnose a definate fault and it is intermittent I have no choice but to drive it.

I understand the theory behind 'limp home' mode. But it seems happy to drive under normal conditions.

Major league stumped:doh:

I have an 03 auto, so, for what its worth, to compare, mine does not do this. Hope you get this sorted, and without too much cost! Good luck.

Not today, but only just had new oil intercooler, rad, hoses 3 weeks ago. So pretty sure that would've been picked up. I do check the plugs quite often as well.

Thanks for the thought.

Hi, seeing as you don't have any faults it will be very difficult to diag on the forum. could be the torque converter stator slipping hence slow pull away then ok once going or perhaps the governor is sticking affecting the line pressure or muck in the valve body. If you are sure it is in the box and not the engine then I would put some gauges and data logger on the box and see what is happening. Though thinking about it any of the above you may end up fitting a box so if you can be sure it is the box it may be best to put the cash you would spend on diag to just fitting another box and converter.

Hi, Guys just a quick update. Things are finally looking up:amen:.

It was the MAF after all. No gear box probs.

Goes like stink again.......Well - you know what I mean.

Thanks to all for the help.
