Disco Td5 buying advice please

Well the time is coming when we are planning to replace our faithful Disco TDi200 manual, '93 currently on French plates, and I'm starting to look at buying something a fair bit newer.

I'm after a 1999, 2000, 2001 Disco TD5 and I know of some of the issues with them, like the oil pump bolts, plastic dowels, oil in the loom (always reminds me of "Fruit of the Loom"), etc

I'm undecided between auto & manual and the for-sale cars seems to be about 50/50 split. We currently have one of each type and I find they both have their plus & minuses.

I'm not fazed by high mileage at all, in fact I, to an extent, think it's a good sign that the thing has kept running !!!

I've seen ads and spoken to a few sellers within my price range of about £2500, so I now open the floor to you ladies & gentlemen.....................

Didn't think auto was the transmision of choice when towing with all the changing up and down when it sees fit??? I know you can lock em in gear but surly a manual is better for towing int it?

If you are only spending £2500 on the landy A new gearbox for an auto will be almost as much as the whole vehicle. manuals are much cheaper to buy.

If you are doing lots of towing then auto.

The problem I have is that on my very limited budget, the cars I'm seeing are split roughly 50-50 manual & auto, so if I opt out of auto, I lose half the possible choices.

Also, I currently tow with our 300 auto and I've found that until you are over 52mph (torque conv lock-up speed) the auto is slipping a bit, whereas I wouldn't have thought that a halfway decent clutch would slip, once you're on the move??

Yes. The manual box is cheaper to replace when it goest tits up.

If memory serves me right the TD5 auto disco has a higher bhp to compensate for the gearbox.
