Errr....how many times is "every time"?

The very fact that the needle hit the red the very first time was an indication that all was NOT fine!

What made you think it was the thermostat? Seeing as it has 2 valves (one for temp and one for suction pressure) it would have had to fail twice. It sounds to me like your problem is that the vehicle is going into limp mode due to overheating or damage caused by overheating.

Early TD5's are prone to head gasket failure due to nylon dowels being used to locate the head. Worse still is the tendancy to crack the head. I would get sniff and compression tests doen if I were you.

Sounds to me like you have an engine rebuild on your hands.
