The Problem: Cutting out when hot and cold.

Got in car started it up and it didn't 'catch' at first turn of key.
Started ok second time. Drove down road, pulled up at some traffic
lights and and it cut out....no cough or splutter...just cut out.
Stopped, put it in D, turned key and it started ok. Ran ok for a few
weeks then it started happening again.

Have just done 600 miles in 2 weeks and it would do the above only when
hot (was towing trailer and towing broken vans around). Now it's doing
it cold as well. Sometimes starts first turn of key, sometimes takes
two turns. last night drove approx a mile from house and tried to turn
right at a junction......cut out in middle of road. Once i restarted
it it was fine. New bits fitted to try and cure this problem include:

New stepper motor (as suugested by my tame spanner man)
New Plugs (needed doing anyway)

Any thoughts as to which bits i swear at next??. One thing has just
crossed my mind though........at the Shakespere unofficial do i did
take it on a see saw and managed to activate the inertia switch behind
the washer bottle. Could this be causing me a problem?.

shouldn't, once reset. check the ignition system carefully for anything
loose. sounds like iffy electrics somewhere to me, and a dead cut like that
is either ignition or just possibly injector signals, but then again, it'd
have to be both sets of injector signals at once.

I'd favour an iffy earth or iffy connection somewhere. I assume your dizzy
cap and leads are all decent - if not, that and the rotor arm are the next
places to look.

Cheers Austin,

Rotor arm is new. 'Spose next things to change would be the dizzy cap
and leads. I was thinking electrical as well. It's too sudden to be a
fuel issue. I'll have a good poke round next week and see what i can
find.

I'll agree with Austin I post this about 3 times a year "the major failing
with the V8's are the electrics " and its common with most Leyland products
of that era including the Jags .I replaced Peggys (Vogue SE 3.5 Efi )
sensors to no effect the cause of my troubles was cheap crappy plugs
connecting to the sensors they are available at Lucas parts shops btw and
quite cheap.Get an assisitant to start the engine while you wriggle he
plugs try the two temperature sender plugs at the front of the heads or more
likely the throttle potentiometer connector till she falters worth while
also cleaning the ignition pack connectors though problems with that plug
tend to manifest themselves with one bank of cylinders shutting down. I also
at one point had to replace the wires to the coil when the spade connector
had corroded through. Its all cheap stuff to do and even if its not causing
problems worth checking

I had an identical problem with my K-reg Disco last year. It began suddenly
and for no apparent reason and gradually got worse, to the point where it
became dangerous. It turned out to be the contacts on the ignition switch.
If the two halves of the switch were squeezed more tightly together, the
contact was OK, if they were left to their own devices, the engine would
cut-out.
