Hi all,

Bit of a weird one, just bought some hd steering arms and a terrafirma steering damper for my disco had it tracked up this weekend and all feels good and tight on the road but when driving into a slight corner the steering feels almost notchy and doesn't want to come straight, it's like it sticks when slightly turning, but using full lock is smooth bit heavier but a lot nicer than before. Any ideas??

Cheers in advance peeps

Could be the damper giving an effect similar to increasing swivel pin pre-load....shouldn't be notchy though

Is it notchy at the same point each time?? If so it Sounds like your damper might have a defect in it, a small dent on the inner tubing maybe? which would explain why on full lock its ok as its past the defect... only thing I can think to why it would feel notchy...

Update guys they've been on since sat and it seems to be going wasn't doing it have as much on the way home from work. Still not sure what it could going to have a look over it at the weekend. I'm hoping its because it's all new

Steering column U/J starting to seize?

+ 1 - get someone to rock the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the steering column inside the engine bay, armed with a can of spray grease.

By putting your finger on the u/j's you will be able to tell if they are the cause of the notchiness. If they are, give them a liberal spray of the grease and get your assistant turn the wheel back and forth a lot, that will work the grease in and will lubricate the joints. Keep working at it until they are smooth again.

Good luck

Dave

Did you just fit the damper straight out the box? Its good to compress/expand the damper to its limits by hand a couple of times before fitting as this gets everything moving again after being stored semi compressed on a shelf for ages.

Just got in guys and its back again, yesturday it felt fine!?!?had it jacked up and everything seems as it should. Thanks dave I shall get the wife to help and try see what the joints are like, mpfive I wouldn't of thought that would of mattered but as I was shocked by the size of the damper I actually did compress and extend the damper, cheers all for the feed back I shall let you all know when I get it sorted, always something with a bloody landrover
